The House appropriations subcommittee for Labor, Heath, Human Services, Education, and Related Services met today for its Fiscal Year 2025 markup - just as it proposed in FY2024 The subcommittee seeks to eliminate/reduce funding in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and in the Higher Education Act (HEA) that will have a negative impact on English language teaching professionals and the multilingual learners of English we serve. The markup impact: ESEA Title I grants reduced by 25% or almost $5 billion over FY24 ESEA Title II and HEA Title II funding eliminated, impacting the pipelines to address the shortage of MLE teachers ESEA Title III funding eliminated, impacting support in public schools for MLEs Take action today to alert your members of Congress, letting them know the importance of funding Title III education.

The latest report from OFSTED evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of how English is taught in 50 schools visited as part of routine inspections.📝 There was much to celebrate, the teaching of reading and the impact of phonics programmes for example, but the report also highlights areas where “there is more work to be done”. Many of the key points raised in the report have been looked at against how Pathways to Write supports schools with teaching English lessons. This detail will reassure subject leaders in Pathways schools that they are applying sound methodology and will also help in their discussions with inspectors. We’ve put together some useful responses to some of the findings. We recommend Pathways to Write subject leaders read the following information and add this to their files for further reference.
