💔 Palliative/hospice care for children/teenagers is one of the last taboos. No kid should face this condition, yet for some (e.g. 20-25% of the kids that get a cancer diagnosis) it's a grim inevitable reality. Discussing the possibility of euthanasia in the GP's office for our son Ruben was one of the hardest things we ever had to deal with. Yet, for my son this was no option, he chose life although his quality of life worsened day-by-day. After this difficult conversation he battled #braincancer for 5 more months with the mentality of a real warrior who just wanted to live.  For us as parents questions keep coming up after this painful journey: what could have been done better? How could we have incorporated end-of-life/spiritual elements to our son's hospice care? It's so important not to avoid these important questions, so many things can be done better in this domain. I believe that a sick child needs "palliative care" = motivation, stimulation. Find out what gives this child "a kick" and what makes each one them think in a fresh way, takes off their focus from 4 hospital walls! Also analyse their bro's and sis' (= the children in the shadow) and their best friends and their parents moral state. What can you = we do to improve their mental state, their belief in a good tomorrow, and give them a perspective. In a figurative way: when there is one-sunray entering your room, isn't it a sunny day? #driveformiles #stimulation

🎗️Access to care is a great concern for parents in Europe. Healthcare professionals and NGO representatives, also recognise it as one of their biggest challenges, as children with cancer who don't live near capital cities need to travel away from home to receive diagnosis and treatment. 🏥Inequalities in #accesstocare basically means that where you live increases or decreases the opportunity on receiving lifesaving care. And this shouldn't be the case when we talk about #childhoodcancer. November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month 💜 Pancreatic cancer is not a rare cancer – one person dies from the disease every hour. Across the UK around 8,800 people are diagnosed with and 8,700 people die from pancreatic cancer each year. Responsible for 5.2% of all cancer deaths in the UK, pancreatic cancer is the fifth biggest cancer killer. It is predicted to overtake breast cancer as the 4th most common cancer killer by 2030. This ERN is creating a global roadmap of healthcare centers with expertise in treating paediatric cancers and helping families make informed decisions by providing clear information on treatment access, quality, safety and reimbursement across the EU. Why do kids with cancer need different treatments than adults? Children fighting cancer face unique challenges. Their bodies are still growing, which means their response to treatment is not the same as adults. Pediatric cancers are also biologically different from adult cancers, often requiring specialized approaches. These differences highlight why treating children with cancer demands tailored care, advanced techniques, and multidisciplinary support. - Pediatric cancers like leukemia and brain tumors are more common, unlike breast or lung cancers in adults. - Children's bodies handle aggressive treatments better, making higher doses possible to improve survival. - The objective of pediatric cancer care is primarily curative.  - Long-term effects matter. Survivors may face growth or learning issues and need ongoing follow-ups. - Survival rates are higher for kids globally, with 80% surviving five years in developed countries. - Access to care is unequal. Urban kids often get better care, while rural families struggle. - Personalized medicine is shaping the future, improving outcomes with child-specific treatments. Supporting these young fighters means focusing on specialized care and ensuring equal access. During #Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we'd like to discuss the challenges faced by children battling cancer worldwide. Despite advancements in treatment, many children still face significant #obstacles in accessing timely, appropriate, and quality care. The International Society of Pediatric Oncology (#SIOPE) conducted a comprehensive survey across 383 participants from 72 countries worldwide. The results showed that the existing challenges worldwide are related to access to care, this includes factors like the lack of hospitals, limited medicine, and too high costs. A terrifying fact is also that early diagnosis is hindered in 8% of cases due to #insufficient #awareness. The findings of the SIOPE survey underscore the urgent need for global #action to address the challenges faced by children with cancer. It's time to start working together to create a world where every child with cancer has the opportunity to receive the best possible care. 🙏👶
