Many schools feel like they have run out of ideasand options, and they have hit a dead end; the only way forward is to exclude the pupil. However when you are in the thick of it and entrenched in the day to day, sometimes it seems impossible and too great a challenge to make a difference but that’s not the case. Sometimes it takes an outside person who has worked in the same situation, with the same children but knows there is always a way to support them further and move forward; supporting and empowering staff in doing so. Small changes can make a big difference. Raising an awareness and understanding, targeting specific need and implementing practical and effective strategies can quickly turn a situation around and give hope and balance. My support meets the school and the pupil where they are at and bridges the gap in provision to close it. Research and real life experience shows us that mentoring young people is needed more than ever. The recent declaration of a national "Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation" by our Surgeon General has brought to the forefront our greatest struggle for all ages - lack of personal connection. This deficit isn't just that "we don't have friends", its speaks to the great crisis of lack of support system for all ages. For kids and seniors, this is most devistating, leading to significant decline in mental health and rise of suicide. We saw this disconnect growing and that's why we founded FORGE Youth Mentoring; connecting generations to restore hope in communities and help young people discover and pursue their full potential. The "win" is not just for the kids, but for the adults and entire community as well. Kids gain healthy self-confidence, a support system, guidance, life and social skills, career and interest development, and significant social capital that they would not have possessed otherwise. Perhaps just as important, the adult volunteers find meaning and purpose, as they use their life experience (past failings and successes), skills, and gained wisdom to empower a young person to create a pathway to success. The road to the top is rough and tough. However, there is usually an untold exception to this general idea of toughness. Those who enjoy social and financial support from loved ones finds the road to the top easier. This perhaps explains why children born to rich and supportive families have a higher likelihood of success than children who are not. In a rich family, you can access the best quality of education that will hand you a top tier career prospects. In a rich family, you can access ready made heritages and inheritance that gives an almost seamless headstart etc. However, it's not all rich families that are supportive, some families are not wealthy yet they provide a moral supportive atmosphere for their children. Again, not all families are a support system, your support system can be a social group: such as peer groups, support groups, ideology groups, mentorship group, intellectual circle, Not-for-profit foundation etc. We all need some form of support system before independence.

This is such an important issue and one we need to support our students and young people with. Our confusing world of social media, polarisation, and feelings of inadequacy are more and more common in our schools, colleges and universities - particularly among our neurodiverse population. We need to support them find their own path to success, and help them to find and understand their strengths; it's a matter of mental health and well being that needs addressing.
