Healthcare Transformation Leader & Speaker | Founder of ZNA: Collaborating to Innovate and Make the World Healthier—TOGETHER. Join the Movement to Transform Healthcare from Within!
As a pediatrician committed to transforming healthcare, I'm inspired by organizations that actively involve communities in designing and delivering health services. One such initiative is the Tubman Center for Health and Freedom in Seattle, Washington.
Founded in 2020 by Black, Native, and queer community leaders, Tubman Health is dedicated to creating a healthcare model that serves marginalized communities, including Black, Brown, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and low-income individuals.
Their mission is to address health and wellness from both systemic and clinical perspectives, practicing medicine at the intersection of health and freedom.
At the heart of Tubman Health's current work is the Freedom Clinic, an integrated, multidisciplinary clinic offering comprehensive and culturally relevant care.
The clinic provides services like primary care, behavioral health, and traditional healing practices, all within a framework that emphasizes equity, inclusion, and relationship-centered care.
This holistic approach reflects their commitment to meeting the unique needs of the communities they serve.
In addition to the Freedom Clinic, Tubman Health is also developing the Healing House, a remarkable space in South Seattle co-designed through a 3 year community process. This micro-scale model offers integrative services in a healing environment featuring gardens and community-inspired art.
Tubman Health exemplifies the future of healthcare: moving beyond "for the community" to "with the community."
By fostering partnerships and actively involving community members in the design and implementation of health services, they are creating a system that is more responsive, inclusive, and effective.
Let's continue to support and learn from such models, striving together to build a healthier future for all.

The Nemours Mobile clinic participated again in Hispanic Federation’s Get Up, Get Moving event a week ago. This event is a great way to celebrate the end of the year with food, dancing, and a lot of community services all together in one place! It’s fun to take healthcare into the community, and our pediatric residents and UCF College of Medicine students did a great job running the clinic and seeing patients. #WellBeyondMedicine
We recently added a new company to our health portfolio with an investment in Zócalo Health.
Zócalo is a digital healthcare platform that provides Latinos with culturally competent and community-oriented care. Nearly 1-in-5 Latinos are uninsured and 58% say they prefer a Spanish speaking doctor. Co-founders Erik Cardenas and Mariza H. started Zócalo to give the Latino community simpler access to healthcare.
The start-up provides patients access to primary care, behavioral health, social services, care coordination, complex care management, and urgent care. The company uses community health workers to engage and build trust with Latino patients and help Medicaid payors—31.4% of Medicaid beneficiaries nationwide identify as Hispanic—better serve a large and underserved demographic.
At Acumen America, we are always looking for companies with a specific focus on impact. Zócalo’s vision aligns with our goals to increase access to healthcare for a growing and historically marginalized population by leveraging tech-enabled solutions with a community focus. Zócalo currently operates in Texas, California, and Washington and is looking to expand to more states.

Vitala 🤝 Goodwin Living
Goodwin Living, a nonprofit senior living and care organization in Northern Virginia, is dedicated to supporting, honoring, and improving the health and independence of older adults. To make rehabilitation more personalized and accessible, Goodwin Living has been offering Vitala to patients and residents across its three campuses and Home Health program.
“We’ve been using Vitala for the past three or four months, it’s highly effective in that it tailors the exercises specifically for the patient’s needs and it gives me confidence as a therapist, knowing that the exercises that it’s prescribing are the best exercises for that patient. It’s been really great to be able to prescribe exercise as medicine to our patients, in addition to the therapy that they’re getting from us.”
- Lia Poynor, director of Goodwin Rehabilitation at The View Alexandria.

The notion—“Meet people where they are”—drove most of my work at The University of Texas at Austin:
• Traveling to children experiencing homelessness or incarceration as a “street pediatrician”
• Providing financial services to low-income patients while they waited in doctors’ offices (StreetCred, Early Bird)
• Leveraging video-chat to fight loneliness (Big & Mini) and keep small businesses afloat (Main Street Relief)
• Delivering groceries to food-insecure families’ homes (Good Apple)
• Taking my students to struggling neighborhoods so they could learn from and partner with folks facing the problems we aimed to solve
That concept is just as important to my work now. High-touch, community-driven efforts can transform America’s systems and improve public health.
Bravo, Raj Panjabi, Toyin Ajayi, and Luther T Clark for shining light on this crucial way to innovate.

The 54,000-square-foot clinic is projected to open in the fall of 2025 with space for up to 27 providers. Aliana Clinic will be located at 11225 W. Grand Parkway South and will increase access to comprehensive primary and specialty care for adults and children. Exciting news from RTP, NC! UNC Health and Duke Health are joining forces to build NC Children's, a comprehensive children's healthcare system with the state's first freestanding children's hospital.
This unprecedented partnership promises to be a game-changer, not just for pediatric care, but also for how healthcare organizations can collaborate to conquer the complexities of care delivery, leveraging finite clinical staff and cutting-edge technology to optimize outcomes.
