Is there a character without a backstory? In animation, as in life (insert metaphor here :d), there isn't. Animation = life (latin. anima = life, soul). We are represented by a complex expression of who we are - how we think, what we believe, our education, our family, our background etc. Some expressions of ourselves are closer to what we know of ourselves. Some are further. In animation, getting as familiar as you can with your character is the key to creating a real soulful character. So we got as close as we could to legendary Hagi, one of our personal favorites. Here's what Adèle Coulloudon , who brought the character to life through animation, has to say: "In animation, a character's backstory is crucial. Understanding how they think, react, and move sets the tone for all their actions. In this case, since I was animating a real person, I had a bunch of material to understand who Hagi is. I spent a lot of time watching interviews and videos on YouTube, immersing myself in his gestures, facial expressions, and overall behavior. This allowed me to truly get to know Hagi, who I previously only knew as a legend. I discovered that while Hagi's delivery might be a bit awkward at times, the message he conveys is incredibly valuable. He's deeply passionate and dedicated, constantly pushing himself to improve, which is something I truly respect." We have nothing but love for Hagi. If our animation captures even 10% of his passion and dedication, then we've done a good job.
