Breakthrough Alert! 🎉 Nemours Children’s Health researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery in the fight against childhood cancer! A recent study found that injecting neuroblastoma tumors with the Zika virus proved to be a game-changer, shrinking tumors in mice and leaving only scar tissue. This suggests that Zika could become an effective cancer therapy in the future. The study was led by Tamarah Westmoreland, MD, PhD and Joseph Mazar, PhD and published today in Cancer Research Communications, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, often doesn't respond well to traditional treatments, and high-risk cases can be especially challenging. The study revealed promising results, with mice experiencing a nearly total loss of tumor size after Zika injections, and no recurrence after four weeks. While more research is needed for safety and efficacy, this breakthrough could offer hope for patients with high-risk neuroblastoma and potentially other cancers expressing high levels of CD24.
