✨ Today, we honor and celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples’—a time to recognize the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities from around the world.✨ 🌎There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 6% of the world's population, but account for at least 15% of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.🌎 📣In order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, every August 9th commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982. ✨ At Rubino, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples from around the world, acknowledging their resilience and the vital role they play in preserving their distinct traditions. Indigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. The positives of celebrating Australia Day include: National Unity: It fosters a sense of national unity and pride among Australians. Celebrations often include citizenship ceremonies, recognizing the diversity and unity of the nation. Cultural Reflection: The day provides an opportunity for Australians to reflect on their country's history, including both its achievements and the challenges faced by Indigenous Australians since European settlement. Community Engagement: Australia Day is marked by community events and celebrations, which encourage community participation and engagement. Education and Awareness: It offers educational opportunities, raising awareness about Australia's history and cultural diversity. Economic Benefits: Public celebrations and events on Australia Day can have positive economic impacts through tourism and local business engagement.

The letter to the South China Morning Post SCMP written by Linda Lam , the newly appointed Equal Opportunities Commission chairperson, highlights an important issue that district council members should take seriously. The recent isolated incident of vandalism targeting ethnic minority families is concerning, but it emphasises the need for greater social cohesion and understanding between people of diverse backgrounds in Hong Kong. As community leaders, district councillors have a responsibility to work towards this goal. The suggestions in the letter - using sports, organising cultural events, and facilitating everyday interactions - are a good starting point. I would encourage all district councils to brainstorm and implement concrete initiatives that can bring different groups together, break down stereotypes, and foster a greater sense of belonging within your local communities. This could include: - Sponsoring multi-cultural sports leagues or tournaments - Organising cultural festivals or heritage celebrations like Eid, Ramadan Iftars, Diwali, etc. - Facilitating language exchange programmes or discussion groups - Encouraging block parties, neighbourhood clean-ups, or other community-building activities The goal should be to move beyond a 'parallel existence' and cultivate truly inclusive communities where people of all backgrounds feel welcomed and respected. District councils are well-positioned to spearhead such efforts at the local level. The letter highlights the personal story of Kowloon City district councillor Dr Rizwan Ullah , who attributed his fluent Cantonese and understanding of local culture to the childhood friendships he made playing football with ethnic Chinese kids in his neighbourhood. Rizwan's experience speaks to the power of sports in breaking down barriers and bringing people together. I would encourage all district councils to follow Rizwan's lead and implement concrete initiatives that can leverage #sports and #culture to bring different groups together, break down #stereotypes, and foster a greater sense of belonging within your local communities. I have had the pleasure of meeting Rizwan on several occasions, including an iftar dinner we attended together in March during #Ramadan. I don’t often delve into the world of politics, but a conversation I had the other day got me thinking. Today marks Australia Day, or January 26th, and with that comes the now annual conversation around what exactly this date means and whether it should, or should not, be changed. I feel that often a lot of the issue surrounding this conversation is how people approach it. Generally, I’ve found that a lot of people become very combative and have an attitude of ‘I’m right and you’re wrong’ which just leads to the conversation going round in circles. I think it’s an important conversation to have, especially if it is done in the right way, so I will attempt to respectfully put my thoughts and opinion on the topic into words. Not all of you may agree with me or everything I say in this post, and that’s okay, but hopefully you can at least see my point of view and understand where I’m coming from. Growing up for me, and I’m sure a lot of other Australians, Australia Day was a day to celebrate the amazing multicultural country we live in and what it means to be Australian. I believe that the majority, if not all, Australian’s who celebrate the day are not doing so to mark the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and raising of the British flag, the colonisation of Australia, or even the anniversary of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 coming into effect on this day in 1949. I also believe that the majority, if not all, Australians don’t celebrate out of a hatred or ill will towards the Indigenous population. As a proud Indigenous man I know I am not personally offended or hurt by the date as I have never once thought about Australia Day being a celebration of what occurred way back when. In saying that, I am also acutely aware that I never had to live through the stolen generation or experience some of the horrendous and traumatic things that my Indigenous ancestors had to. I, like most, associate Australia Day as being a day to spend with friends and/or family around the BBQ, playing beach cricket, and a day in which we as a collective nation can celebrate what Australia and its culture is, and more importantly, what it could be. Therefore the date itself is irrelevant to me. I say all that to say this, if the meaning of the day for people like me and so many others is not associated with historical events which happened on January 26th then why not just move the date to one which doesn't raise feelings of generational trauma and hurt for so many of the Indigenous population? A date which we can all get behind, and create tradition around, to celebrate our nations Indigenous roots as well as all the other cultures and traditions which make our nation so diverse and unique? The Australia Day public holiday wasn’t even nationally celebrated on January 26th until 1994 so why can’t we just go back to celebrating it on a floating date in late Jan / early Feb which would guarantee a long weekend and help us all move forward as a nation?

Every year on May 21, we celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, also known as Diversity Day. This special day encourages us to appreciate the rich cultural diversities that exist among different countries, states, and people worldwide. It’s a reminder that cultural differences should be celebrated rather than leading to conflicts. In fact, a significant portion of major global conflicts about three quarters have cultural dimensions. The most comprehensive and thought provoking article I've come across that addresses the current impacts of civil unrest on interculturalism. As many of us have turned our focus on contributing to small and large-scale improvements to diversity, equity and inclusion in our work and communities, witnessing ongoing polarization and violence is very troubling. Why is it happening? Are there lessons to be had on how can we each contribute to protecting the inclusive cities we have been trying to build?
