If your fertility specialist told you to take your pregnancy with a large pinch of salt, you’d probably be taken aback. But that’s quite literally what you need to do! Iodine, which is found in old-fashioned table salt, is essential for healthy brain development. A higher than usual intake of iodine in pregnancy is, therefore, crucial to ensure your baby gets what they need while in the womb. In fact, it is recommended that women who are hoping to become pregnant or are pregnant get 220 micrograms (mcg) of iodine per day, and breastfeeding mums should get as much as 290 mcg a day. 🙌 More information can be found on my website: https://lnkd.in/gjuhyT2m

Director, Adult Congenital Heart Center, INOVA Health System | NIH/NHLBI Cardiac Imaging | UVA School of Medicine
Atrial septal defect (ASD) ranks among the most prevalent congenital defects observed in pregnant women. While many patients are asymptomatic prior to pregnancy, the persistent left-to-right shunt leads to increased volume and enlargement of the right ventricle (RV), a condition that can be further aggravated by the volume retention associated with pregnancy. Additionally, may increase the risk of arrhythmias. It takes a multidisciplinary team to manage these patients; particularly in the United States which has the highest rate of maternal mortality/morbidity amongst all developed countries. #achd
