It's important to note that, to ensure best practice, agencies should use completely independent chairs. By this, we mean someone from a different organisation/agency that is not involved with the case. Greater clarity in the statutory guidance would be beneficial in this regard, to ensure that all areas are using the same definition of independent. It really takes a lot to be a great Trustee. Taking responsibility (in ALL your areas of responsibility) and always acting in the best interests of the charity, is crucial. Over the last 25 years, I have worked with some brilliant Trustees. Having been a Trustee myself, I would say that you should ensure you are fully aware of the responsibilities BEFORE you go for a Trustee role. If you haven’t got the necessary skills, knowledge and experience, and you can’t manage risk (even taking a risk, and being brave at times), don’t become a Trustee.
