There are many myths about the causes of and solutions to homelessness: Myth: People experiencing homelessness just need to get a job. Fact: While employment helps people stay housed, it does not guarantee housing. Up to 60% of people experiencing homelessness have a job, but housing is unaffordable because wages have not kept up with rising rents. Experts from our real estate, planning and regulatory teams have contributed to a landmark residential initiative aimed at addressing homelessness in Greater Manchester. Kathryn Jump, Judy Fawcett, and Robert Nieri provided pro-bono legal expertise for the Embassy Village development. Spearheaded by charity Embassy, the project is also being supported by developers Peel Waters and Capital&Centric, alongside members of the region’s business community. Work is now underway at the city-centre site located beside the Bridgewater Canal in Manchester's Castlefield area. The purpose-built village will include 40 homes, a village hall, green spaces, allotments, and a sports area. It aims to provide housing and support for homeless men in Greater Manchester - also offering residents wraparound care and weekly training on essential skills such as home management, cooking, and budgeting. With the average rent for a one-bedroom in the Phoenix metro area approaching $1,500 (including utilities), many employed individuals find it difficult to save enough to sign a lease. That is where our Workforce Villages program is filling the gaps other programs can't. We created this transitional housing program for clients who are working a full-time job but facing housing insecurity before they need emergency shelter and become homeless. During the 90-day program, clients not only save 70-80% of their net income in their own bank account but also participate in our life skills classes, including: - Personal Finance 101 - Meal Budgeting and Planning - Professional Success Skills We are dedicated to empowering individuals through accountability and education to better their lives and permanently escape the cycles of poverty and housing insecurity. We're making critical steps toward creating more housing for those in need, hand-in-hand with our brilliant industry partners. A vacant mansion in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs has been lovingly restored and handed over to YWCA Australia to provide emergency transitional accommodation for up to six women, at risk of homelessness at any one time. #Gardenhouse is a collaboration between Housing All Australians, YWCA Housing, The Salvation Army and more than 40 private companies that have helped transform a vacant building into emergency accommodation for women over 50 in need of temporary shelter. The project demonstrates what is possible when private sector organisations and not-for-profits come together to support a growing crisis. Gardenhouse is the second pop-up project by HAA and partners including home builder Metricon and Quest Apartment Hotels and their suppliers, who collectively donated hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of labour, products, and services to refit the building and bring the project to reality. https://hubs.ly/Q02wRVNP0
