Interesting article in NYT about an overused medical diagnosis “failure to thrive”. Is it perhap “a failure to investigate?” It’s overused on both young children and older adults. When used to diagnose children, the term can cast blame on parents. Are children born after assisted reproductive technologies (ART), at higher risk of developing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH)? In this new study, Carrie Williams, Kathryn Bunch, Charles Stiller, Mike Murphy, Beverley Botting, Melanie Davies, Barbara Luke, Philip Lupo, and Alastair Sutcliffe investigate the potential associations in this relatively under-researched, but potentially severe disease. The team conducted a large, population-based, linkage study in Great Britain, analysing 118,155 records from the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority to investigate the risk of developing LCH before the age of 15 years in individuals born after assisted reproduction in childhood. Potential associations between different types of assisted reproduction, parental subfertility and LCH risk were also examined.
