It’s often said that most brachial plexus birth injuries are mild and will heal on their own. But the reality is more complicated. Dr. Meisel and Dr. Durham, co-direct the Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Program at CHLA. The multidisciplinary team sees more than 300 patients a year. Unfortunately, many of those babies aren’t referred to the team until they are 6 or 9 months old—or even older.

The Hidden Danger of Congenital Hip Dysplasia and the Importance of Early Detection The Department of Medical Services, through the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, emphasizes the critical need for parents to vigilantly monitor their infants from birth for any signs of congenital hip dysplasia. This condition can be subtle and often goes unnoticed until the child starts walking. Parents should look for symptoms such as uneven legs, limited leg movement, or abnormal walking patterns like limping, slow walking, a wobbling body, noticeable buttocks, and a heavily arched back. These could indicate a hidden hip dislocation. Read more at https://lnkd.in/gFNqRJHd

🚨Congenital heart defects affect 1 newborn every 15 minutes. This equals to about 40,000 baby's or 1 in 115 births in which the baby is born with (congenital) a heart defect. Some of the more common defects include: ❤️Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) which can close on their own ❤️Atrial or venous septal defects (ASD/VSD/AVSD) where there is a hole in the septum which separates the right from the left side of the heart at the atrium (top,) venous (bottom,) or both. More severe heart defects require surgery within days of birth or within the first year of life. Often requiring multiple procedures to ensure adequate oxygenation and perfusion to the body. 👶All neonates receive a CCHD test - Critical Congenital Heart Disease - at 24 hours old or as close to discharge as possible. This is a non-invasive test that is done by placing a pulse oximeter ("red space light") on the right hand (Important!) and either foot. One should be >95% and the numbers should be 3% or less apart in order to be negative. Retesting can occur in one hour if initially positive. This is a tool and does not necessarily catch all heart defects, however it has significantly reduced those that are life threatening and missed. It allows for cardiology specialists to be consulted and the baby to be thoroughly evaluated. CCHD screening targets 7 defects: Hypoplastic left heart, Pulmonary atresia (with intact septum), Tetralogy of Fallot, Total anomalous pulmonary venous return, Transposition of the great arteries, Tricuspid atresia, and Truncus arteriosus. Anyone else work in a facility that takes care of these little heart warriors? I do! We are a regional center for CHD in Washington. Do you know someone who was born with a congenital heart defect? #CHD #PICUNurse #GenesisLegalNurse #LegalNurseConsulting #Attorney #Lawyer

The heartbreaking story of a former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader, who tragically passed away from sepsis complications possibly linked to fluid overload after childbirth, deeply moves us. This tragedy underscores the risks of a one-size-fits-all approach to medical treatment. As her husband movingly noted, "That's the same protocol that's done for a 23-year-old that's very healthy. It can't be a one-size-fits-all." At Flosonics Medical, we resonate with this perspective. We champion personalized care and precision fluid management to achieve the best outcomes. FloPatch provides clinicians with real-time, accurate insights into a patient’s fluid responsiveness, facilitating precise fluid management. This capability is crucial to avoiding risks associated with fluid overload, such as increased pressure on failing organs, which is vital in managing sepsis effectively. https://lnkd.in/gSujz_kt

Directed by Dearbhla Glynn with DOP Paddy Jordan, this short film has been made to raise awareness, reduce stigma about fistula, and highlight the devastating impact fistula has on women who live with this condition. The goal is to make life better and safer for women giving birth and to prevent fistula from happening in the first place. The film is a call to action to improve access to maternal care including quality, safe, timely, and affordable surgical, obstetric, and anesthesia care—and promote safe motherhood for all. What is Fistula ? Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury in which an abnormal opening forms between a woman’s bladder and vagina or between the rectum and the vagina as a result of prolonged obstructed labor, resulting in continuous urinary or stool leakage. This condition is rare in high-income countries due to readily available obstetric care, while it continues to plague women in low resource settings. Estimates suggest that at least 2 million women have un unrepaired obstetric fistula in low-income countries. see https://lnkd.in/giyeDdVP for more information and full credits.

What is an arteriovenous malformation (AVM)? An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins that resembles a small bag of spaghetti. The abnormal blood vessels in an AVM are fragile and can bleed easily. AVMs can occur anywhere in the body but are most dangerous in the brain and spinal cord. The cause of AVMs is unclear. Most people with AVMs are born with them, but they may not be detected until they cause symptoms in adulthood. Around two hundred Australians are diagnosed with brain AVMs each year. Some people with AVMs will never have any symptoms, and an AVM of the brain may be an incidental finding when a brain scan is done for another reason (for example, for recurrent headaches or following a head injury). NEC is a very serious complication of prematurity. It is our responsibility to mitigate as many potential risks as possible. As a NICU nurse, I don’t understand how we are implementing an adult feeding system in the NICU that requires a cleaning protocol to reduce the growth of bacteria on the hub. Current research shows that even after cleaning the hubs of the adult mote there is still bacteria in them. Wouldn’t it make more sense to use a feeding system that was specifically designed for the NICU to reduce the risk of NEC? #keepourbabiessafe #keepNICUnursessafe
"Necrotizing enterocolitis is not just a major disease that affects premature infants. Rather, it is the very definition of a phantom menace. Creeping up silently and without warning, NEC strikes fiercely and without restraint, and is feared by neonatal caregivers of all stripes. From the point of view of the family, however, NEC is like a phantom menace on steroids." This is precisely why our NEC Society team is working tirelessly to #preventNEC and build a world without this devastating disease.
