National Child Support Awareness Week 4-10 December. It is obvious when relationships end and people leave the common home that the expenses will change when there are children from the relationship. One home becomes two homes, there is less money to go around. Parents can get cheaper cars, downscale on accommodation, and reduce spending on entertainment, clothes, and holidays. In most cases children's fixed costs can't be downscaled, 👉They need food to survive and THRIVE, to grow, to be able to concentrate at school, have the energy to play sport. They need food for after school activities. 👉They need to go to creche or school. There are uniforms, stationery, books, and extramural activities, civies days, school excursions. They need to get to school and extramural activities. 👉They need clothes to wear at home, to go out and to sleep in. 👉They need a roof over their head, a bedroom and privacy, electricity and water. If they had a pet before they will probably keep it, it needs food and occasionally to see the vet. 👉Children need medical care at some stage, some more than others. Even going to state facilities cost money, transport, food and often the mother takes unpaid leave. When men don't pay enough or at all, not only are they being cruel, they are abusing their children and the mothers as mothers have to pick up the slack. This contributes to economic inequality with is gendered .

Each year, Kentucky Youth Advocates releases the Blueprint for Kentucky’s Children policy agenda featuring state policy and budget priorities for kids and families. The Blueprint is a coalition that speaks with a common voice and stands on three pillars: thriving communities launch strong families, strong families launch successful kids, and successful kids launch a prosperous future for Kentucky. "As we look ahead to 2024, there’s an abundance of opportunities and obligations facing the Governor and General Assembly, especially in the development of the biennial state budget. From access to affordable housing and child care to mental health and educational outcomes, all kids deserve safe, healthy, and thriving childhoods. That can only begin with a strong commitment and sustained investment in our youngest Kentuckians,” said Terry Brooks, executive director, Kentucky Youth Advocates. One thought: A great idea Sometimes you stare at the blank screen and contemplate all the bad choices you’ve made to get you to this place. This place where you know nothing, have no ideas and can’t string two sentences together. And sometimes (well pretty much always, eventually) the idea finds a way to drop onto the page like cold rain in November. In searching around for a crumb of an idea yesterday, I came across three great communications ideas – from someone else for something else and at three levels of budget. Aside from being creative ideas, the thread connecting the tactics to strategy and mission is clear and strong. Maybe these will inspire you. Great Idea #1 PEN America is teaming up with singer-songwriter, P!nk, to give away 2,000 banned books at her concerts in Florida and draw attention to the book banning crisis across the country. According to PEN America’s latest report, Banned in the USA, book bans increased 33% in the 2022-23 school year. The report highlights the disproportionate number of bans occurring in Florida — where 40 percent of all book bans took place in the 2022-23 school year. — and shows how state legislation and coordinated pressure campaigns from local groups and individuals have driven mass restrictions on access to literature. Great Idea #2 Sticking with books, Jess Davidson put me on to this spirited character in California whose wholesome, energetic, daily Instagram content about the value of libraries will, hand on heart, begin to restore your faith in humanity. @mychal works for the Solano County Library and I promise you that watching the video from banned book week that equates checking out banned books to buying marijuana from a guy in a trench coat will make your day better. Great Idea #3 I have a soft spot for the Children’s Aid Foundation. I, along with many others, organized Newzapalooza, a media battle of the bands for many years in support of children and youth in the child welfare system. They just launched A Safe Plate: Stories and Recipes of Young People from Child Welfare. It includes recipes from former youth in care and, importantly, their stories about why this meal matters to them. STATE OF THE STATE - CHILD CARE Governor Kathy Hochul's State of the State address included more emphasis on children than we have probably ever heard in one of these addresses. However, there was resounding silence around child care. While New York made historic investments in child care last year, the work is far from done. Earlier expressions of concern for the lack of quality, affordable child care mean nothing without sustained investment beyond short-term COVID relief. New York children need: (a) A permanent state child care fund to increase compensation for early childhood educators so they are paid on par with similar positions in public schools. (b) More availability of evening, night and weekend care because not all parents work 9 to 5. (c) Expanded access to care for children with special needs. Kids need care. Parents need predictability.
