A full house and a system-wide audience! More than 500 team members joined us both in person and virtually for our Children’s Wisconsin town hall, which was filled with meaningful conversations, recognition and a few surprises. Gil Peri, President and CEO opened the event by sharing one of his favorite quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of MLK Day. The event also highlighted the incredible work our staff is doing, including Demetrius, a Public Safety Officer who was recognized for his compassionate response in assisting a visitor in distress. These town halls focus on open dialogue, connection and celebrating the individuals who make a difference every day. We are already looking forward to the next one!

Today marks a profound moment in United States history. January 20th is both the Presidential Inauguration of President Donald J. Trump and the Federal Holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we look ahead as a nation, it’s equally important to look back. Below is a link to Robert F. Kennedy’s heartfelt speech announcing the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While I’ve heard snippets of this speech before, its words carry even greater meaning today. I encourage you to watch the video, but if you don’t, please take a moment to reflect on Robert Kennedy’s powerful closing remarks: “We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times; we’ve had difficult times in the past; we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it’s not the end of disorder. But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land. And let’s dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people. Thank you very much.” Postscript: This rare overlap of MLK Day and Inauguration Day has happened before—in 1997 during President Clinton’s second term and in 2013 during President Obama’s second term. UNC-Chapel Hill's 2025 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week, which honors the civil rights leader’s bridge-building legacy, includes events highlighting our community’s commitment to solidarity and social justice. This week reminds us that despite the challenges of today and tomorrow, we hold onto Dr. King’s dream. His work undoubtedly influenced the field of public health, as he frequently called attention to “a considerable amount of discrimination” with regard to health and hospitalization. Dr. King also championed specific changes in programs and policies that could reduce racial inequity in social determinants of health. Today, MLK Day coincides with Inauguration Day, and the timing could not be more fitting. Now, more than ever, we are in dire need of true community. Not community built to: • Increase revenue. • Reduce churn. • Lower the number of support tickets. • Or identify the next product or service to sell. But real community—the kind Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned as “The Beloved Community.” A community that enriches our lives. A community that celebrates our joys and successes. A community that shares our burdens. A community where we can all rise together. Building The Beloved Community requires more than policy or business plans. It calls for a profound change in how we live and how we treat one another. It challenges us to reimagine our priorities—not just as individuals but as a collective. “Our goal is to create a beloved community, and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Let’s work toward that vision—today and every day.
