This is one of my favorite exercises in my workshops on leadership and development. As people, we are extremely confident when defending our favorite teams, celebrities, and political figures. In a moment’s notice, I switch from having participants defend their favorite players to defending their own plans for their lives. For these participants in particular, the exercise also gives them a chance to exude confidence as public speakers. First responders are not only public servants but also leaders. The expectation is that they will be able to articulate and communicate to citizens in a manner that reflects their professional capacities. The stakes are much higher for this generation of cadets.
