In the pricing community, dynamic pricing is often believed to the ultimate goal of pricing for profit and max sales volume. Last week, NIVA - National Independent Venue Association sent a letter to Yelp’s CEO exposing deceptive and fake ticket sales across their platform. Their partner, TicketNetwork, was selling “tickets” on Yelp that do not actually exist, "tickets" to shows that have never existed, or real tickets marked up two to fifteen times the price of face value tickets that are often still available from the venue. TWO HOURS after the letter went public, Yelp ended these practices and removed ticket sales from predatory resellers off of their platform. This is a victory for consumers that face deceptive resale practices across the internet everyday. It is also a win for the small businesses and nonprofits that make up the independent live ecosystem. Once Congress passes the Fans First Act, these tactics will be illegal and fans can have more trust in the ticket buying experience. 🚨 Yesterday, Washington D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwab filed suit against online ticket reseller StubHub for alleged deceptive pricing practices. By including ‘Fulfillment and Service’ fees at the last stage of checkout, the complaint alleges that StubHub is using ‘dark patterns’ in their pricing.
