One more year visiting the South of Spain, where my roots are. First Cordoba, my hometown, amazing cultural city, 3 monuments Patrimony of Mankind and.... Epicenter of climate change in Europe. last summer, the most heat waves in history, reaching several consecutive days with max temperatures of 45 C (113F), several times during the summer. My city is a hub for olive oil production, now in danger as the combination of droughts and floods affects the crops. Luckily more and more farmers choose #RegenerativeAgriculture, a feasible proven solution to capture water in the soil and even improve organic content, capturing CO2 at the same time. Follow Javier Peña for more news on this. Then Malaga, where the coast that feeds thousands of small and medium businesses and tourists adore, could well dissapear in few years due to climate change and raising water levels. But for now, I am going to enjoy the smooth ride in this 100% electric train that reaches 360km/hr effortlessly, powered by solar and wind energy in one of the countries with the highest renewable electricity percentage in the world. Yep, a renewable future is possible and it can be beautiful too. Not everything is gloom and doom. Let's celebrate the wins! Are you celebrating your wins? One more “radical” must-do for Greece: Stop building highways and start building a high-speed electrified railway network. Today, rail travel in Greece is, depending on location, occasion, and luck: - Impossible - Snail slow - Lethal The Greek railway system is #65 in the world on a per capita basis, below even Zimbabwe, Botswana and Cuba. The EU average is 2,133 residents per track kilometer. In Greece it is 4,808. On a per land area basis, Greece has 1 km of track per 59 sq. km when the EU average is 20. Don’t mention mountains and valleys as an excuse, because Switzerland is at 1,631 and 7.76 respectively.

"The green energy revolution’s first casualties: Sweden's reindeer herders The benefits of fighting climate change are shared broadly. The costs are borne locally. Every winter of her adult life, Inger-Ann Omma has traveled to the mountains to guide her reindeer safely down from their high summer pastures. Any winter now, it could be for the last time — not because of climate change, but because of the fight against it. One frozen day this November, Omma’s phone pinged. Her 6,500 reindeer had turned their soft muzzles toward the distant Baltic coast and charged down the pathless mountains on the Swedish-Norwegian border. Omma, 42, grabbed the panic bag she keeps beside the cupboard. The great annual migration had begun, and some of her reindeer were already mixed up with another herd. If she didn’t collect them, they would be lost." Four time Amnesty International Award Winner and British Foreign Correspondent of the Year. Film Director. Writer. Human Rights and Climate Crisis Storytelling.
Each morning, when I am in Barcelona, I run across a stretch of La Carretera de les Aigües - roughly translated in English as "The road of the waters." The trail floats above this city of red rooftops and reminds me of a smaller version of the Hollywood Hills. In the distance, I can see white sailing boats drifting on the Meditteranean and departing ferries heading out with the gulls to Palma and Mahon. Since I returned from Indonesia in January, the almond trees have blossomed across my mountain route as the unseasonal heat has intensified. A drought has been declared on the road of waters and across Catalonia - we are on notice for worse to come. On the modernist lamposts that dot the Exiample District, signs have been posted in Catalan that declare: "l’aigua no cau del cel" - water doesn’t fall from the sky. No truer word has been spoken. Where is the rain? I travel the world to shoot films and give talks on the climate crisis that intersect my experiences in the most remote corners of the Arctic, the Middle East, the Pacific and Africa. Still, the story is increasingly on my doorstep. It can't only be documented or told through testimony from the earth's extremities. Europe is warming at twice the rate of other continents. Last July, there was a moment I had denied in the previous years when we had to leave because the heat was too severe. For Spain, this is the beginning of the end of a way of life that has celebrated long, balmy evenings and the hedonism of summer. Will we come to dread it like we do winter in Scotland or the far northern Hemisphere? #climatechange #drought #filmmaking #storytelling

AKKAN Maritime A.S. şirketinde Board Director & Founder of SPARTAN YACHTS 🇫🇴 Faroe Islands Türkiye & Greece Excl. Rep.
The Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, are nestled in the North Atlantic between Norway and Iceland, and north of Scotland. Comprising 18 islands, they cover a total area of about 1,400 square kilometers and have a population of around 50,000. The capital, #Tórshavn, is the largest city. The #Faroe Islands' #history traces back to the #Viking Age. Norwegian Vikings are believed to have discovered the islands in the 9th #century. They became part of the Kingdom of #Norway in 1035 and later fell under #Danish rule in 1814 after the Denmark-Norway union dissolved. In 1948, the #Faroe Islands gained extensive autonomy, establishing their own parliament, the Løgting. The islands' economy is predominantly based on #fishing, which is the main livelihood and constitutes a significant portion of exports. In recent years, tourism has grown rapidly, attracting nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Visitors are drawn to the islands' stunning landscapes, green hills, rugged coastlines, and tranquil villages. The #Faroe Islands have a cool and damp climate, heavily influenced by the #North #Atlantic Ocean. The weather is typically variable and windy, which helps maintain the lush vegetation. Culturally, the #Faroe Islands boast a rich folklore and traditional music heritage. Faroese folk music, dances, and songs are integral to the islands' cultural identity. #Faroese, the primary language, is considered an old dialect of Norwegian. In summary, the #Faroe Islands are a unique and special place in the #North #Atlantic, known for their exceptional natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and strong fishing economy.

I love Brazil 🇧🇷. In 2006, after a long and complex military service I flew to a 2 month planned trip in South America. I ended up traveling for almost a year, 7 months in Brazil and thought even staying to live there. I learned how to speak 🗣️ Portuguese, play Bossa Nova, and joined a local Capoeira Group. Learning about the extreme temperatures 🤒 that were recorded this week and the risk to people’s lives bring me back to the scenes of Fortaleza, my coffee ☕️ house in Rio. This is not a theroretical story as over the weekend a fan passed away in a Taylor Swift concert 🎶. Inmet thermometers repeatedly registered temperatures above 40C across the country, with a peak of 43.3C in Corumbá on the border with Bolivia on Wednesday. Temperatures of 37.7C in São Paulo and 42.6C Rio de Janeiro broke records for the year. Locals are coining the name “Hell de Janeiro” and I cannot watch this place that was in my mind a magical and tropical 🌴 place as hell. This requires us to think differently first how we adapt things like sports events or music feativals that will protect people’s health. Like in places like Canada 🇨🇦 the infrastructure is built for heavy snow ❄️, we need to rethink regulations and infrastructure about how cities and industries works. #climatechange #infrastructure #brazil #sustainability #heatwave #climatetech #climateaction Open Society Foundations Constance Malleret https://lnkd.in/epBsdv3c
