*** NO SURPRISE *** Hindsight judgement of fault in crashes It's not often I cut and paste big chunks of research papers because as a rule, whilst the content is almost always valuable, it's often written in a style that takes some penetrating. However, in this particular paper entitled "Hindsight Judgment of Driver Fault in Traffic Accident Analysis", and subtitled "Misusing the Science of Accident Reconstruction", I honestly don't think it needs any reframing. I'll start with this statement: "From in-depth studies of traffic accidents in the Salonde-Provence area of France, for example, it was found that “one of the most common cases was when the behavior of one road user, called ‘active,’ took by surprise another road user, called ‘reactive,’ forcing the second to suddenly carry out evasive action'. "While many will agree that the active driver was responsible for at least initiating a conflict, some will claim that the reactive driver could have and should have responded differently to have avoided the collision, especially when the injuries were serious." I'll just point out a key word... if you're a regular here, you'll recognise it: SURPRISE!
