German battery recycling start-up cylib, which counts Porsche AG and Bosch as backers, broke ground on its first European industrial plant in western Germany, the company said on Monday. The technical challenges of mass production for all-solid-state batteries are mainly concentrated in the preparation of battery electrodes and electrolyte membranes, as well as the densification of the battery. Due to the different electrochemical and physical properties of materials, various processes can have a significant impact on the thickness and ionic conductivity of the solid electrolyte membrane.

Battery recycling poses significant challenges as we move towards enhanced sustainability and a circular economy. The German publicly funded ZIRKEL consortium, a collaboration of Volkswagen, Liebherr Group, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Ascon Systems and many more, is investigating how automation can aid in large-scale battery dismantling. The goal is to optimize the transfer of raw materials back into the recycling loop. We are proud to be a partner in this initiative.
