Time to ditch the desk chair for the dance floor (speaking metaphorically, unless your office has one of those awesome break rooms). 😁 But before you head out, let's take a trip around the world and see how our global teams get their freak on.💃🏽🕺🏽 🇺🇸 In USA: Donut Fridays are a classic, even though in New York, people put a spin on it with international flavors!😜 🇮🇹 Meanwhile, in Italy: Most are embracing la dolce vita with a long and lovely lunch break - al fresco, of course! ☀️ When company culture is aligned, Fridays are more than just the end of the workweek, they're a celebration of collaboration, creativity, and that undeniable camaraderie that comes with being part of something we believe in. Cultural intelligence is about creating a space where people from all backgrounds feel valued, heard, and empowered to bring their best selves and be their best selves. We weave cultural intelligence into everything we do, from celebrating Diwali with delicious Indian sweets to hosting casual "Learn a Language Over Lunch" sessions. It's these little touches that weave the beautiful tapestry of our global culture. We learn from each other, celebrate our differences, and most importantly, have FUN while doing it! One thing's for sure: distance can't stop our love for celebrating the end of the week! As we revel in the colorful festivities of Holi, it's a time to cherish the vibrancy of life and the bonds we share. From the kaleidoscope of hues to the delightful taste of sweets, esp. ‘Gujiya’ :), every aspect of Holi fills us with gratitude and joy.   In the midst of splashing colors and exchanging sweets, there lies a profound symbolism. Each color represents a different emotion, reminding us of the diversity that enriches our lives. Yet, amidst the joyous chaos, there are those stubborn colors that cling on, challenging us to embrace differences without complaint.   This beautiful chaos of Holi holds a mirror to our workplace dynamics. Holi's also about letting go of the past, right? So maybe forgive that colleague who "borrowed" your stapler a little too permanently. Or approach that tricky project with a fresh, positive outlook. So I walked into a coffeeshop this week with a friend and got a hot drink, chatting away. What was a bit unusual? We are nowhere close in age. Obviously, that’s not important to us. We’re neighbors and we have great conversations. Regardless of age, as people we’re both interested in home renovation (she is so talented!), career projects, travel, and more. It’s not the first coffeeshop we’ve visited. ➡️ I see many posts encouraging more dialogue between generations. CoGenerate and Generations Working Together are two groups active in this work. Applause! 👏 Generations Working Together is now carrying out Global Intergenerational Week, in fact. Programs are great but communication is carried out person-to-person. In your life, how about just saying hi 👋 to a “person” and not to a demographic category based on age alone? ➡️ I see posts about blending work teams that include multiple generations. Really? The highest-performing teams I’ve worked on have been multigenerational. We did not care about someone’s birthdate. We cared about pooling our talents and getting a ton of work done. 👍 How about hiring based on skills instead of age alone? Whether at a coffeeshop or building a work team, honestly, just talk person-to-person. 🫶 Drop the categories. Order a hot mint tea or latte. ☕️ Relax. Talk. Years ago, around this time of the festival season, I was faced with the same choice as all CEOs… How to celebrate the end-of-the-year holidays. Do you tie in all holidays (happy Kwanzaa!) or just the big ones? Or maybe none at all? We went with “none-of-the-above” and decided instead to celebrate the most famous of all the made-up holidays: Festivus. Festivus is a (made-up) non-religious holiday in which you gather to recognize three important things. The airing of grievances – For us at Very, this is more tongue-in-cheek and takes the form of “I'd like to air a grievance against Fred, he’s always killing it with clients and making us look bad”. Feats of strength – Celebrating individuals who have really over-delivered and/or worked hard to become excellent in some key area. Usually (but not always) technical. Festivus miracles – And finally the coupe de grace. This is typically more about group efforts. Think: - A team that came together to produce an outstanding outcome. At a top-tier product consultancy like Very, this often takes the form of client engagements, but again, not always. This is all, admittedly, pretty non-traditional. But so is Very.
