Is China's job market spontaneously reallocating its human resources to ease the pressure of the long-criticized red queen effect (Q1, Q2, Q3)? Q1: "More than 3 million people took China's annual civil service exam on the weekend,..." Q2: "...the prospect of a less glamorous career in the civil service is increasingly attractive as private sector job opportunities dwindle." Q3: "A record high of 39,600 vacancies are up for grabs at central government agencies and affiliated institutions. On average, 77 candidates are competing for every position..."
Record numbers sit for China civil service exam, hoping for job security

As I've completed my first month of articles, I'm reflecting on the unconventional journey that brought me here. After studying law, I took a detour to teach English in South Korea. The uncertainty of securing articles in South Africa, coupled with the high cost of living and being responsible to pay off my NSFAS study loan, made it impossible to start off my career. Five incredible years in South Korea offered endless opportunities for growth, travel, and personal development - an experience I'll forever be grateful for. But as time passed, I felt trapped in Korea's comfort zone and insecure about my legal knowledge. I wondered if I still had what it takes to pursue my dream. After returning to South Africa, I was determined to get back on track. The application process was stressful, and interviews were daunting. After three months of searching, I thought I wouldn't secure articles, and insecurity became a reality. Then, something surreal happened. I got a call on a Saturday morning, on my way to the gym, just before starting my Practical Vocational Training Gawie le Roux Institute of Law. I was called for an immediate interview for a Candidate Attorney vacancy and I got asked to start immediately. I'm thrilled to have started this new journey and excited for what's to come. For now, here are my takeaways: - It's okay to take unconventional paths to start your career. - Perseverance and determination can lead to achieving your goals. #ESLTeacher #LawStudent #TeachingAbroad #CareerGrowth #Perseverance #CandidateAttorney

Do you have a saying or sayings, original to you or borrowed, that you really live by? I have several that I count on regularly to give me the courage to keep going in the face of adversity. One, original to me, is "when the ground beneath your feet shakes, bend your knees and ride it out." This refers to emotional earthquakes that shake you to the core. The instinct is to stiffen in fear become rigid about many "do's and don'ts", "wills and won'ts." "I won't work for xyz company." "I won't relocate" Just as in a real earthquake, stiffening up and standing rigid will get you tossed on your behind. The best way through is to soften those knees, be easy, and you'll make it through. I've applied this to things like being fired from my job on a few occasions (twice from the same job, strangely enough. Things like that rock you world in the worst way possible. But you can get through. _________________________________________________________________________ Hi there, I’m Joan Collins Burt, former trainer with the Canadian Government, helping Medical Sales Reps and other non-native English speakers learn the English skills they need to avoid missing out on opportunities for advancement. UAE Hospitality Specialist Recruiter | GCC Head Hunter | GCC-SA, International Recruiter | CV Expert
Dear LinkedIn community 🤔 I have a question, particularly for hiring teams: Why is it that in today's era, there's still a focus on requesting matriculation results before even considering a CV? Regardless of whether one holds a degree or a master's, the emphasis often disregards these qualifications in favor of matriculation scores. What if someone, like a renowned psychologist in South Africa, is seeking new opportunities, only to be judged based on matriculation results from two decades ago? This scenario, while hypothetical, reflects a common frustration. A friend of mine recently experienced this ordeal, where despite being highly qualified, their application was dismissed due to matriculation scores. Even after reaching out to the hiring team, they were directed back to the application process, repeating the same cycle. 🌟 Let's rethink our hiring criteria to ensure we're valuing relevant qualifications and experience over dated metrics. 🌟
