This is how I track and analyze the success of my private dental practice’s patient referral program ... 𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀. 1. Number of referrals generated 2. Conversion rate of referrals to new patients 3. Revenue generated from referred patients 𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀. 1. Have you ever heard of the deadweight loss of Christmas? Joel Waldfogel did this study in 1992 and it is very interesting. The premise is to determine the difference in perceived value of a gift from the recipient's perspective, and the actual value of the gift from how much the giver spent. It was determined that between ten percent to one-third of the value of a gift is destroyed by gift giving. Those receiving the gift place a lower value on the gift than the amount actually spent. The solution? It seems that it would be best to give cash as a gift in order to avoid these wasted dollars. (I’m summarizing this and I suggest you read it for yourself) How does this relate to healthcare? Currently employees are having their money spent on their behalf and they are being given only a couple of options that were picked for them. This seems to be one of the least efficient methods for handling healthcare spend. There is no freedom of choice in this situation! The other problem with one-size-fits-all group healthcare options is - it's actually more like you took 10% of your employees (your highest claims risk population) tailored a gift for them, then said "oh yeah, and everyone else gets one too." Even if you don't mean to - you do it, because discrimination laws make you do it under threat of death... ok, well actually just giant penalties. Giving employees the ability to choose (being given cash) where this money is spent would allow for more efficient spending and would reduce the deadweight loss significantly. On top of this, the perceived value would actually align with the real value.
