Marry your niche, vary your format Once you've chosen a niche, you should continue testing different formats to enrich the content as much as possible. For example, James Corden's late-night talk show is known for its extensive testing. Besides the most popular "Car Pool Kareoke", he also tried: "Crosswalk Musical" (performing a 60-second musical during green light) "Face Your Mother" (asking the audience questions, but their moms are on Zoom behind them) "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts" (Truth or Dare, eat weird food if you don't answer) After a lot of testing, once he finds what works, he doubles down, making James Corden's show unique. Creators can take a cue from this, asking themselves: "What would my show look like?" and then start testing extensively.

Shoegaze always felt like a slightly forgotten musical genre, overshadowed by grunge and Britpop. So it's nice to see it get some time in the sun, thanks to a TikTok revival. The cycle of trends got me thinking this week - how much is history repeating, and how much is our world changing? Check out my latest post on Only Third Party, where I consider this question by way of shoegaze, ONS data on milestones, and Ofcom's latest report on children's media lives. The link is in my bio.

Learn from (but don’t be overwhelmed by) your teachers. Last night I went to the Showstopper musical improv show in London’s west end. I am currently doing my third course with them learning the art of making up a musical on the spot. It looks impossible, but with great teamwork, presence and creative thinking, you can make it happen! At one point I felt really over-awed by the performance and my teachers. “Wow, I could never be this good” rattled through my head. Then I stopped myself. Sure, maybe I won’t ever perform musical improv to that level. But that doesn’t stop me from learning from those ahead of me and putting that learning into practice. And that got me thinking. We are comparing ourselves to others all the time (at least I am!) Rather than allowing yourself to feel smaller, what if you used it to observe how you could get bigger and better? That’s why I recommend that my public speaking coaching clients get inspiration from famous speakers but DON’T TRY TO BE THEM. You are you. And you are magnificent just as you are. You just need to keep telling yourself. #personalgrowth #publicspeakingcoach #musicalimprov

10 Lessons I learnt from Watching "The Greatest Showman" I hate musicals, but I just watched "The Greatest Showman" again last night. Definitely the best musical and greatest entertaining movie I've seen in a long time. I just realized, there are so many lessons in this great movie that can be applied to your personal & business life. Considering that we listen to so many "guru's " on all the platform for advice on just about anything. It was a good realization that you could get some great life lessons from a movie Here are 10 things I could take from this great musical. 1. This is me, look out here I come! 2. What are you in love with? 3. When is enough, enough? 4. Anything is possible if you really want it! 5. Don't forget where you come from! 6. Never stop dreaming! 7. Bring joy to people's lives. 8. You don't need everybody to love you, only a few good people. 9. Putting people from all walks of life into on arena and treating everybody with respect 10. The noble's art is that of making others happy. Yes, for now my feeling on musicals have changed.

One of the most frequent question I'm asked is how do I _____ so I can submit to theaters? It could be "get an agent" or something similar. For most projects, it's not the right question to be asking. Who do you have relationships with? Right now? See that's the thing. While I do know playwrights who do well by mailings and submissions, it's not the best route. Especially when you're early in your career or at least not well-established. Have you ever seen your work on stage? Then starting with a 20-person full-length musical might not be the way to go either. I'm not saying don't write big musicals. I'm not saying don't submit your work to theaters. What I am saying is start where you are. Do you know a couple of singers and a director and you play piano and you have access to an outdoor stage at a local park? Start there. Don't throw out your "bigger than Phantom" show idea. Consider something you could write in a month or two, put on with $500, and invite everyone you know. I promise you'll learn more and accelerate the process more that way. Of course, if you're already done all that, reach out. We can talk about what's next.
