New from Luminary Labs: 50 Prizable climate opportunities. Addressing #climatechange will require systemic change. But how will that change actually happen? Many federal agencies use “push mechanisms” like grantmaking and #policy to advance climate goals. But sometimes #grants and policies alone aren’t enough to solve complex problems. When it’s too early, too risky, or too hard — or when push mechanisms won’t deliver an innovation fast enough — “pull mechanisms” and market-shaping tools like prizes can accelerate innovation by delivering the right incentives at the right time to generate and develop viable solutions. To be sure, not all problems are “prizable.” Traditional procurement is often better when the ideal solution is known and already exists. Sometimes the market solves a problem on its own, or policies are enough to create the desired change. But when a problem is well-defined, a group of innovators is engaged, the foundational science and technology exist, and sufficient incentives are available, an incentive prize can yield breakthrough solutions. Inspired by the once-in-a-generation opportunity to advance rapid and transformative solutions and make a real impact on the future, Rebecca Meyer, Janna Gilbert, Benjamin Algreen Adler, Cameron Fox, Jessica Hibbard, Alex Leader, Andrew Wallace and I teamed up with Reed Van Beveren, Jessica Mahr, and Christopher Putney of the Environmental Policy Innovation Center Center to curate a list of 50 climate prize ideas. LanzaTech’s CEO, Jennifer Holmgren, was named as one of the key innovators in scaling up carbon bio-recycling and catalysing a circular economy.    Under Dr. Holmgren's leadership, LanzaTech became a pioneering Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) technology company, going public and demonstrating that its commercial-scale bio-recycling approach can play a pivotal role in keeping our planet liveable for the long term. LanzaTech has prevented more than 330,000 tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere across six commercial plants. Systems thinking on a planetary scale, we can no longer just consider carbon because we can’t measure the others the biosphere is natures CCUS and while we continue to neglect that we risk missing the point. We may not be able to measure it but we can see it. As I reposted earlier, from DEFRA, the UK is one of the most biodeplete countries on the planet, we need to think differently & do better. Without nature there is no economy.

While the mainstream conversation about our planet’s future is heavily dominated by the topic of climate change, there are other systems which are just as critical to consider when thinking about the health and livability of our world. Just like climate change, each of these systems has its own limits within which humanity and the biosphere can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come. However, each also has a critical tipping point - known as a Planetary Boundary - past which Earth’s systems may no longer be able to self-regulate or remain the comfortable and predictable home in which we’ve spent our entire history as a species. In this episode, I speak with environmental scientist Johan Rockström to unpack his team’s work on Planetary Boundaries and the pressure that humanity is putting on them. What are we risking as we continue on our path towards pushing each of these interdependent systems past the point where they can continue to function? Is it possible to reverse the damage that consumptive, growth-based systems have already done to our planetary home and prevent further destruction? Johan Rockström is an internationally recognized scientist on global sustainability issues. He led the development of the Planetary Boundaries framework for human development in the current era of rapid global change. He is a leading scientist on global water resources, with more than 25 years experience in applied water research in tropical regions, and more than 150 research publications in fields ranging from applied land and water management to global sustainability. In addition to his research endeavors, which has been widely used to guide policy, Rockström is active as a consultant for several governments and business networks. He also acts as an advisor for sustainable development issues at international meetings including the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conferences (UNFCCC). Professor Rockström chairs the advisory board for the EAT Foundation and is a member of the Earth League and has been appointed as chair of the Earth Commission.
