When Ava Joyner was just a month old, she was diagnosed with sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder. From day one, her journey has been supported by CHKD's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, where a dedicated team of specialists collaborates on her care and provides essential support to her family. Despite the many trips from Franklin to Norfolk, Ava's family and care team at CHKD have been a constant source of support. Whether it's for medical treatment or helping Ava navigate her emotions through learning and play, they're with her every step of the way. Now an energetic toddler with a love for the color pink, bananas, and strawberry smoothies, Ava will keep receiving care at CHKD as she continues to grow. ❤️💙💛 #CHKD #SickleCellAwareness #HealthHealingHope

Monday was a special day at #CHKD! To celebrate National Teddy Bear Day, our Pediatric Surgery team handed out stuffed animals to clinic patients, thanks to generous donations from #TeamCHKD members. 🧸 Healthy Bear himself took a tour around the hospital, spreading joy and posing for pics with patients, families, and staff. One little guy loved Healthy Bear so much that he didn't want to let go! His younger brother even tried to follow the bear on his hospital adventures for the rest of the day. Administrative Secretary for Pediatric Surgery and Healthy Bear’s trusty guide for the day, Morgan Pierce shared, “I was so pleased to see all the happy faces. The staff may have enjoyed the visit as much as the patients!” Thanks to all who helped make this day special for our patients and team members. #Pediatrics

I have been with Urology at CHKD for one and a half years. I like watching real-life-based action, drama, and comedies. The movie Miracle in Cell No. 7 had me in tears, and I would recommend it to everyone. 

We are pleased to announce that #CHKD Vice President of Quality and Safety Dr. John Harrington was recently appointed to Governor Glenn Youngkin's Advisory Board on Behavior Analysis. Dr. Harrington brings his extensive experience and passion for helping families of children with autism to this exciting new role. "The first step in helping families dealing with autism is access to qualified services such as Applied Behavioral Analysts," Dr. Harrington shares.
