Over the course of my recent trip to London, I had several conversations about finding either the "right seat" or the "right firm" Pretty much every hedge fund is set up in a different way...yes there are similarities but not every multi-start works the same way etc. Perhaps a firm is set up in a way to protect its IP, perhaps another firm follows more of a single manager model. Perhaps another is more of a prop firm. Many firms have strict stop loss / risk parameters. None of this makes one firm "better" than another, but what it does mean is that not every firm is suitable for every person. The hedge funds with the largest AUM aren't necessarily 'the best' and smaller AUMs don't make other hedge funds worse. However, very large AUM might mean access to more research, better infrastructure support etc. Might also mean a more recognisable name on your resume too! The key to finding a new seat, where you can be most successful is working out what helps you perform to the best of your ability. Thanks for reading and hope it helps. So, you worked hard on your pitch or application and they get back to you with “sorry, not interested as we don’t see the value proposition”. Let’s get the facts straight: failure is normal. We still live in a business climate which demonizes failure but most business pitches get actually rejected and companies can only hire <1% of the applicants for a job. Even at a hedge fund level, my macro strategies involve a 53% hit rate. I am basically wrong half the times. Failure is normal, but how do you increase the odds of landing a successful pitch? This is what I learnt from allocators rejecting the pitch to invest in my macro hedge fund so far. I was doing things upside down. If you start your pitch with a bunch of data and emotionless facts, you lost them already. If your value proposition is there, make them see it! 1) Start your pitch with the conclusion: your stakeholders’ attention level is the highest in the first 2 minutes, so you want to get the main message across in this window. 2) Tell them your story: people invest in people, people hire people. Pour yourself out there, and your odds will increase. 3) Listen, ask questions, be concise: communication is a 2-way street, so don’t forget there is someone else sitting across you. Show real interest in their perspective. Applying these 3 corrections really helped me increase the success rate of my hedge fund pitch. I still get a lot of rejections, and that’s completely normal. Normalize failure. But if you have a real value proposition, make sure people can see it.
