tl;dr - No one owes you anything; You have to go take the opportunity when it presents itself. Falling in line and waiting your turn doesn't entitle you to anything. Story: A couple weeks ago I was at a, classic, old school, traditional bar. Nothing special; a long bar with 20-ish bar stools, 3-4 bartenders, 2 pool tables and some booths. The crowd was a bit younger - probably early 20's (Gen Z). Approximately 75% of the bar was open to walk up straight to the bar, or even sit down. However - the aforementioned crowd somehow, without direction, created two long lines on each end of the bar to order drinks... The lines were about 10-15 people just standing there waiting their turn to order. Baffled by this, I simply, logically walked up to the open bar space and instantly a bartender took my order and gave my my drink. (IMO) There's been a pretty drastic shift in mentality since I "came up" in the world. Participation trophies, lack of true competitiveness, and an overall sense of entitlement that if you just show up, you "deserve" the award/promotion/pay raise etc. Where did all the passion go? All this to say; don't just "fall in line" and assume you're owed something just for showing up; Be hungry, competitive, opportunistic and try to win every chance you get - take the opportunity in front of you, because it's likely your peers are just "standing in line at the bar waiting their turn." 😁 FWIW #advice #salescoaching

More evidence from HMRC data that the 10.1% increase in Excise Duty on spirits last year is failing to deliver revenue for the Treasury and it is hurting the growth of our most productive home-grown success industries. The next government must cut Excise Duty on spirits to support growth of our iconic spirits industry. #backspirits
New figures revealed today show that the revenue receipts from the spirits industry is £108 million down on where it was this time last year. That’s over £100 million less that the government has to spend on vital public services. The spirits industry is a key contributor to the UK economy and it is vital that a new government understands its value. After all, pubs are more than pints. We’re encouraging all candidates to visit their local distillers or independent pubs to hear about the challenges the industry is facing and what they can do to help. If you’re a candidate and would like to visit, get in touch and we can help organise. #BackSpirits

Premier Inn owner Whitbread PLC (LSE:WTB) said it would be cutting 1,500 jobs and shutting sites as part of an overhaul of its food and drinks business. Sales and profits at the hospitality group jumped by double digits year-on-year in the 2024 financial; however, its pubs and eateries business, which includes chains like Brewers Fayre and Beefeater, has been struggling. Revenues from the group’s UK food and beverage division dropped 2% year-on-year in the first weeks of the new financial year, largely caused by “softer trading in a number of our branded restaurants”. Therefore, the company announced its “accelerated growth plan” – a turnaround strategy which will see 126 lower-returning restaurants closed while converting an extra 112 into new hotel rooms. Some 21 restaurant sites have already been earmarked for sale for £28 million. Whitbread expects its actions will lead to pre-tax profits rising by as...
