I'm happy to share insights from my latest blog, shedding light on a significant development in marine conservation – the #French fisheries closures in the #BayofBiscay. Join me on this deep dive into the details! For an entire month, common #dolphins are granted a well-deserved sanctuary, escaping the persistent threat of #bycatch that has plagued these vibrant waters. Over 9000 common dolphins fall victim to bycatch each year in the Bay of Biscay. It's a crucial pause that allows these intelligent and social creatures to roam freely, unburdened by the risks posed by fishing activities. What makes this closure particularly noteworthy is its timing during a peak fishing season, emphasising the commitment to balance ecological sustainability with economic interests. Over 400 vessels are required to stop fishing during the closure period! It's crucial to acknowledge that this decision has come after a 30 year delay and a significant lack of action. While disheartening, this milestone is a testament to the resilience of environmental advocacy and the collective voice pushing for change. The recognition of this issue after three decades is a pivotal step toward ensuring that marine conservation remains at the forefront of policy considerations. As we celebrate this victory, let's also use it as a springboard for broader discussions on sustainable fishing practices, habitat preservation, and the delicate balance required for the coexistence of marine life and human activities. The Bay of Biscay closures serve as a beacon of hope, illustrating that positive change is achievable even in the face of longstanding challenges.
