Authenticity shouldn't be hard... If it is, your doing it wrong. The social media explosion along with our latest media darling (Artificial Intelligence or AI) is taking "polished" to a whole new level. I don't want to do business with polished or perfect, I want the real you. The authentic you. I want the sit around the campfire version of you. I don't want the filtered version. There is a real opportunity to simply be authentic, and you shouldn't have to try. You don't have to "try" you just have to "be". If you find yourself trying, then there is a really good chance that your faking it, or trying to hard, and people will see that very quickly and easily, with or without AI. One of my concerns with AI is that it will attempt to make us look too good, too perfect. For those that have figured out their tribe (if not go read Seth Godin's Tribes), this creates an unbelievable opportunity. Linked In is telling me as I type that I should click a button and "Rewrite with AI"...I didn't. It sounded great, but it wasn't really me. I am not anti-AI, I am seeing some very cool things. I think there are going to be some great efficiency gains with AI. But, trust is going to be an issue, it always is, and it must be earned. Create or consume. The choice has always been yours. AI is speeding up your decision making. Daniel Priestley said this on the The Diary Of A CEO podcast this week: “AI is very good at turning you into a creator or a consumer.” I completely agree. For a while now algorithms (AI) have been getting better and better at helping you consume. Netflix. YouTube. TikTok. etc. This is speeding up. At the same time tools that you can use to create are getting better and better and are entering the market faster. This will speed up too. The barrier to creating something will be lower than ever. I believe in the joy of making things. I believe we are born to create. Don’t get me wrong. I love to be a consumer sometimes. It’s not one or the other. It’s both. But the scale can be tipped in one direction if you are not paying attention. Have a song in your head? A movie in your mind? A business you want to build? Get started now. Consume less. Create more.
