After some decent weather, South Australia once again seems to be struck with another false start with single digit degree mornings! I have noticed some people have already done their renovations which is fine, it just means you will need to be that little more patient for recovery. Those of you that haven't done it yet, don't stress there is still plenty of time, in fact you still have many months to do it. A few questions I am seeing pop up repetitively in our inbox and on the lawn forums are: Do I have to core my lawn? Do I have to top dress? Do I have to seed me Couch/Kikuyu lawn where the bare patches are? The short answer to those questions is no, but let me explain why you should or shouldn't. Firstly, do I have to core my lawn? Personally I believe this is the BEST thing you can do to your lawn. Coring your lawn can be done manually or with a machine where tines or spikes pierce the lawn and go into the soil removind a physical core. By doing this it helps relive compaction, allows water, nutrients and oxygen into the root zone and also helps with removing thatch. Secondly, do I need to top dress? Absolutely not, BUT if you are chasing a flat surface to mow or looking to bring up some low spots, then top dressing is essential. A bonus question commonly asked is do I need to top dress after coring and again the answer is no, but if you are looking to improve your levels, soil and aid with drainage then yes, top dressing after coring is also essential. Thirdly, do I have to seed my Couch/Kikuyu lawn where the bare patches are? No not at all. Couch and Kikuyu turf varieties produce both stolons and rhizomes. This means that the turf is able to spread on top of the surface and below the surface. Meaning that with the right care and patience, these turf varieties will spread into bare areas in your lawn. The main reason you don't want to use a Couch or Kikuyu seed in an existing Couch or Kikuyu lawn is because it will be almost impossible to match the look and texture.
