Strategic Communications Executive | Delivering communications with data and storytelling to advance social change, public policy and compel action
One of the best things we do at the California Health Care Foundation is make sure decision-makers have accurate information and facts on health care issues, especially on Medi-Cal, the state’s health insurance program for Californians with low incomes. For example, did you know Medi-Cal covers 39% of all births in California? That's a big deal as state and local health leaders find ways to improve maternal care and ensure children have quality care from their earliest days. Learn more in CHCF's newest Medi-Cal facts and figures almanac about how state leaders can implement strategies to address disparities in access, quality, and outcomes of care for Medi-Cal enrollees of color. #facts #healthcare #MediCal

As we start to digest the changes coming from the finalization of CMCS' managed care and access final rules, here are some broader thoughts on the value of Medicaid and managed care. I was privileged to be able to sit down with AHIP's communications team recently to talk about why Medicaid matters, the value-add of managed care, and what we all can do to improve how we meaningfully engage the members we serve. It starts with polar bears and the Dharma Initiative, but eventually gets to a focus on culturally and linguistically relevant member engagement strategies to improving the eligibility redetermination process, Along the way we touch on Health Related Social Needs, the need for better care for justice involved populations, and the challenge and opportunity to better handle transitions in life circumstances that too often mean that people can lose their connection to the health care system. Why does Medicaid matter? It’s a lifeline for many communities — for example, it covers nearly half of all births in the United States, and it’s the largest provider of mental health support. Matt Salo sat down with us to talk about what it means to connect with America’s most vulnerable people through Medicaid and how to speak their language. We also look at the innovative work in this space, particularly from health insurance providers, to address social barriers to care. Listen in for a one-of-a-kind perspective on the importance of communication and collaboration: https://bit.ly/3xJAMPY

Anxieties about insurance coverage come up all the time in primary care practice. It is a common barrier to our being able to care for people as they need and deserve. All of us receive messages from patients who need help but won't make an appointment because they have lost their insurance. All of us have seen patients who were off their medications for extended periods - with irreversible consequences to their health - because they lost their insurance and didn't realize how they could get new coverage. All of us have patients who skip medications, or can't get to appointments, or refuse specialist care, because their insurance plan is not well designed for their needs. Never again will the staff and physicians at Jefferson Health feel at a loss in these situations. Starting this week, all our ambulatory teams will have a simple referral option in our Electronic Medical Record, to connect patients to independent insurance navigators who will provide professional counseling about the range of options available to them. In less than 5 seconds, we can now connect our patients to the advice they need. This is a major, concrete win in our efforts to meaningfully address the social determinants of health. Founder @Morainbow Down syndrome Foundation & Learning center, President @Save Down syndrome, Global inclusive collaborator and neurodivergent leader
My journey as a mother to my beloved daughter has truly deepened my understanding of the critical importance of being well-versed in health insurance options. Ensuring access to top-notch healthcare for our family should never be impeded by financial barriers. By staying informed about the array of insurance plans available and staying abreast of developments within the healthcare system, we can guarantee that our children receive the necessary care they deserve. Let's take a proactive approach by increasing our awareness of insurance, thereby securing the best possible support and making informed decisions for the well-being of our children. Together, let's advocate for a healthcare system that prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility for all. It is essential that we strive for a healthcare environment that is welcoming and accommodating to individuals with different needs and backgrounds. By advocating for policies that promote equal access to healthcare services, we can create a more equitable and compassionate system that benefits everyone. Let's work towards a future where healthcare is truly accessible to all, regardless of their circumstances or conditions. #talk2tm #healthinsurance #informeddecisions #downsyndromeadvocate #disabilityadvocate #neurodivergent #healthcareequality #accessibilityinhealthcare

Founder & CEO, Empower Health Strategies | Empowering digital health innovators with expert insight into the patient experience to create patient-centric, industry-leading healthcare solutions | IBD
As always, my fellow IBD patient advocate, Natalie Hayden, expertly examines a healthcare and patient experience issue that we all need to be talking about -- the time-intensive, frustrating task of constantly having to go "head-to-head" with insurance companies patients are saddled with. (Story of my life! I'm dealing with an absurd and annoying-as-heck insurance situation now...) 😣 Check out her recent blog, "Healthcare Here: A Campaign to Take the Burden Off Patients and Hospital" on her Lights, Camera, Crohn's website to learn more about this issue and Healthcare Here's mission to address it. 😷 🏥 Here's a snippet: "Going head-to-head with insurance companies goes hand in hand with managing chronic illness. The amount of time wasted, and energy exhausted over the course of a patient’s journey is incomprehensible. But the Alliance for Access to Care is looking to change that with the help of its latest campaign known as Healthcare Here. This coalition of healthcare associations has shared concerns about the way that insurance companies have adopted and implemented practices and policies that impede timely decisions related to treatment coverage at the expense of patient care. The burden of these practices, as we know all too well, not only falls on patients, but also on local hospitals that make up the backbone of community care that so many people rely on." #patientadvocacy #healthcare #healthadvocacy #healthcarehere #allianceforaccesstocare #catholichealthassociation

Some key findings here: ▶ Different hospitals, different prices. The procedure is listed at $73,719 at Southern Ocean, $60,090 at Jersey Shore and $55,156 at Bayshore. ▶ Different insurance companies, different prices. At Jersey Shore, the negotiated rate for the procedure for non-Medicare plans ranges from $43,020 at Cigna to $63,518 at UnitedHealthcare, the later of which is more than the gross price. ▶ Same insurance company, different hospitals, different prices. ▶ Commercial insurance plan, Medicare Advantage plan, different prices.
