This article makes a beautiful argument for considering the needs of family caregivers along with those of the hospital-at-home patient. I want to emphasize that if we are creating a new patient (the unprepared, over-stressed caregiver) in order to save another (her loved one), are we accomplishing anything? If you’re about to take on caregiving, it’s a great preview! https://lnkd.in/g-bxD7yQ

Great interview with our Trualta founder and CEO, Jonathan Davis on HIStalk. "At the end of the day, all caregiving journeys are different. We anchor on the training outcome. We want our caregivers to feel more confident and less alone, which we know leads to better care for the patient, the loved one they are caring for." Caregiving isn't without its challenges — from managing daily tasks like feeding and bathing to handling household chores, your responsibilities can quickly become overwhelming. For those new to caregiving, the sheer volume of responsibilities can feel impossible. To ease the transition, the National Institute on Aging recommends three key starting points for your caregiving journey: 1. Educate yourself about the person's medical condition: Understanding the details of their condition is essential for providing effective care and preparing for any potential emergencies. 2. Determine where to get help: Seek support from family members, experienced caregivers, or online and community resources to lighten your caregiving load. 3. Consider additional training: Many organizations offer free or affordable caregiving training programs to help you develop the skills and confidence needed to excel in your caregiving role. Above all, remember that every caregiver starts somewhere. With access to valuable resources and a willingness to learn, you can navigate the challenges of caregiving with compassion and confidence. Effective collaboration between hospice agencies and healthcare providers is paramount for improving patient outcomes during end-of-life care. This partnership fosters a comprehensive approach to patient well-being, ensuring seamless communication and coordinated care. Healthcare providers can focus on medical treatments, early palliative interventions, and efficient symptom management, enhancing the patient's overall quality of life. The transition from curative to hospice care becomes smoother and less distressing, allowing patients to receive comfort and dignity during their final stages. Families also benefit from emotional support, while consistent medication management reduces complications. Ultimately, this collaborative effort centers on the patient's needs, preferences, and goals, optimizing resource allocation and promoting a compassionate, patient-centered approach to care. In this second article of a 10-part “Empowering the Citizen Patient: Caregiving and Caregiver Resources” series in Castlegar News, Dr. Mindy Smith, a retired family physician, shares her expertise. Focusing on caregivers, Dr. Smith offers practical tips and resources to help support their loved ones and themselves. Dr. Smith shared: "As a doctor who has seen many patients in the caregiver role, and as a caregiver myself, expressing how stressful it is can be difficult. It’s like there’s an unwritten rule that says you should keep your struggles to yourself because the person you’re helping is dealing with a lot more. But the truth is, admitting we’re having a tough time allows us to seek the support we need to continue providing care with compassion and strength." 💡 Resources featured in this article include: - B.C.’s Home Care services - First Nations Health Authority resources for Elders and caregivers - Family Caregivers of BC for support and coaching - End-of-life and palliative care services - Advance Care Planning - Financial support options for employed caregivers https://lnkd.in/gcUup4en
