This article made me sad. 😞 In the cover picture for the article, the CEO is surrounded by her CTO, Chief Product Officer, and COO. She is not alone yet the CEOs interviewed highlighted their feelings of loneliness. We've all heard "it's lonely at the top." However, there is no need for it to be that way in pre-market biotech if your C-suite is who they should be and they are able to contribute their best. You will not feel alone if you lead your team in an enabling way. If you are feeling alone in your decisions, take a look at the composition of your executive team as well as how you're leading the team. Are you wearing too many hats, or heaven forbid, micromanaging?
Outside experts help fill gaps in expertise and experience in the early days yet you may get as many opinions on strategy as there are experts – another reason why the talent and wisdom within your C-suite should matter most in making the wisest decisions as the CEO.
Experienced advisors can alert you to blindspots and an executive coach can help you build the kind of team you need while helping you improve your decision-making and leadership skills.
There was a suggestion that one can look to other biotech CEO peers for support. However, it cannot substitute for first getting it right within your company.
Being a biotech CEO is difficult for sure, every situation will be a bit different, and the learning curve can be steep. However, you CAN prepare for it, learn quickly with the help of the right advisors, surround yourself with the right team whose input you can trust, and benefit from personal and professional support by working with the right executive coach.
If you feel like you are in it alone, don't let that be a blindspot. Know that it doesn't have to be, nor should it be that way!
