Connect with as many people as possible. Exchange contact information and follow up on LinkedIn. 2. Plan conferences are only a few days long, so they can fly by. Get a game plan for what sessions you want to attend and who you want to network with. Don't forget to leave time to check out the sponsors. 3. Take lots of notes. Don't try to remember everything in your head. Bring your favorite notebook or note-taking app to store key points and takeaways from sessions and conversations you have. Are you meeting “on purpose”? 🤔 When I was planning our most recent in-person gathering for the Salesforce User Group, Gainesville, Florida USA with Leah Zissimopulos Fraser, I drew inspiration from a book I have been reading. The book is called, “The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters” by Priya Parker. 📖 She suggests that when planning any gathering, the first step is to consider the purpose of the gathering. “When we don’t examine the deeper assumptions behind why we gather, we end up skipping too quickly to replicating old, staid formats of gathering. And we forgo the possibility of creating something memorable, even transformative.” She further emphasized that, “When we gather, we often make the mistake of conflating category with purpose. We outsource our decisions and our assumptions about our gatherings to people, formats, and contexts that are not our own. We get lulled into the false belief that knowing the category of the gathering...will be instructive to designing it. But we often choose the template—and the activities activities and structure that go along with it—before we’re clear on our purpose. And we do this just as much for gatherings that are as low stakes as a networking night as for gatherings that are as high stakes as a court trial.” While planning our in-person event we went deeper into the reasons why we wanted this event to happen and what other people would want out of it as well. Ultimately, we determined that we wanted to build local connections and community because there is safety in having people to lean on when times get tough and joy and comfort in finding people who can share in and understand our wins. Knowing this and that most people would be meeting each other for the very first time, I created the sheet (pictured below) to help attendees feel comfortable, to know what to expect during the event, to help seed conversations, and to let them know how to stay in the loop on future events. We also played a quick Trivia Quiz Game (with prizes! 🏆) using Mentimeter on everyone’s phones with questions about Gainesville and #Salesforce and I added a QR code to the Menti on my handy-dandy sheet for easy access. 🤓👍 The highs and lows of getting right and wrong answers in the quiz really brought out a totally different side of people’s personalities. It was a really fun and lively activity to break the ice with a bunch of strangers. 😍 I dare you to shake things up a bit at your next gathering (big or small), but don’t forget the first step of considering the deeper purpose of the gathering. ❤️👌 #trailblazercommunity #theartofgathering

With huge events coming up this month, here are steps to ensure you create qualified leads and build pipeline from the event. You have RE+ on September 9th, SaaStr on September 10th, and HubSpot on September 18th. 1. Create a booth schedule and assign staff (and be sure some are ready to be greeters and some are ready for deeper conversations/mini demos) 2. Have a game or prize for your booth staff for first qualified lead of the day or most qualified leads per day. Track and reward your booth staff. 3. Bring a diverse group of your team to represent you at the booth. Do not bring all SDRs or one sales team. Mix up the role, seniority, focus, so that you can handle incoming interest appropriately and shift conversations. 4. Review the speakers, the agenda, and attendee information and decide on great people of interest or connection points - try to meet with them or ask them to help send traffic to your booth. 5. No food or drink out at your booth. Also no backpacks and gear all laying around the corner of your booth. See point 1 and when you're ON at the booth store your gear in your hotel lobby or ask the venue for a safe place for gear. You want your booth to look appealing & open for conversation. 6. Plan your follow ups, your emails, your marketing communication now. Ensure you are ready and run some tests. Decide when your first message (during or post event will be sent).
