I wonder what the combined cost would be when including the many voluntary hours spent by Māori, the legal community, community organisations and others in submission writing and appearing before select committee on this Bill (and other recent ones for that matter). Think of all the constructive kaupapa that energy could go towards.

Not everyone agrees that the progression of the Treaty Principles Bill is pointless. I’m rather looking forward to it personally. We should encouraging engagement, rather than offering excuses not to have a debate.

And what’s the opportunity cost if we were doing more constructive and important work.

My personal view is that we should simply not waste these resources. This isn’t a real bill, it doesn’t actually enjoy the support of the House required to get to Select Committee. It’s a transactional sellout of the institution of Parliament at best, a giant troll designed to achieve nothing but to divide and radicalise at worst. The smart move for iwi, NGOs and concerned citizens would be to loudly, publically disengage, and call out Luxon for enabling this ugly circus when doing it. DONT FEED THE TROLL!

Good point! Not just this bill and other recent ones, but all of those over the last 186 years that have soaked up so much time and energy of generations of Māori. Perhaps you've stumbled onto the key to unlocking NZ's productivity??!
