A young Oklahoma little leaguer was accidentally hit in the head by a ball.... and the pitcher was devastated.
So the kid who was hit walked out to the pitcher’s mound to let the pitcher know that he’s going to be okay.
Now THAT is sportsmanship.

Rupture and repair.
It’s not enough to simply acknowledge what happened and then move on.
In order to repair a rupture. So that we can move forward together (even as competitors), we MUST:
Own our part
Accept the consequences
Reconcile where appropriate
Without those three middle steps, one or both parties, will be stuck.
In this example, the pitcher is clearly owning the pitch and accepting the consequences of a player on first. THEN the batter realizes that the rupture has not yet been repaired, so the player approaches the pitcher and offers to reconcile so both can move forward… together - in healthy competition with each other. Amazing display of emotional intelligence and maturity.
Brad Werner first introduced me to the concept of rupture and repair years ago, and I am forever grateful.
I make this outline for how to repair in Habit 45 from my book Blueprint for Value.
Acknowledge
Own
Accept
Reconcile
Move forward together
Is their a rupture in your life that needs to be repaired so that one or both of you can move forward?

Great demonstration of the power of humility, forgiveness and choosing reconciliation over offense. This is the kind of response we need to encourage and develop in the people we lead.
Just a couple quick reflections:
1. Take time to observe and determine the facts before reacting. When the batter is on first base he watches the pitcher with a posture of humility and a desire for understanding in the context of patience.
2. Choose to act with mindfulness and sensitivity towards the offender and the observing world. Once the batter observes the context of the pitcher (unintentional mistake that devesates the pitcher) the batter makes a brave decision to approach in a posture of humility. Pace and time ensure this doesn't turn into a larger conflict.
3. Forgive. Privately, the batter seeing the pitcher's sorrow, addresses the situation and demonstrates true forgiveness.
4. Rally. Unify the relationship, the team and outside observers around higher values, and virtues.
