At the risk of offending “road workers”.. (if that’s even a term for them)… I’ve just passed (over a 20 minute journey) 4 sets of road works, involving diggers and various bits of specialist machinery. In each case, one person was doing the “work” (operating the digger and digging the hole etc) and at least 2 others (in one case it was 5!) were standing around, watching. Literally just looking at the hole being dug. Doing nothing else. Standing, hands in pockets, watching.. Is this normal? Am I being unfair, and their job involves more than just watching (and I clearly don’t understand the intricacies of digging holes). Is it a health and safety thing? From just glancing at these scenes, it appears (to a layperson like me) that there’s surely room for improved efficiencies that would benefit everyone, not just the frustrated commuters wanting to get to their destinations.

How to Tie up a Boat: Docking for Beginners Here are some fundamental boat docking methods for novices: Pre-Docking Items to Consider: 1. Learn about the layout of the dock and the space that is available. 2. Verify the water and weather conditions. 3. Select the appropriate docking technique (e.g., parallel, stern-in, or bow-in). 4. Verify that your boat's fenders, lines, and other components are securely fastened. 5. If applicable, communicate with your crew. * Fundamental Docking Methods: 1. Docking with a bow: Approach the dock from a 45 Degrees angle. 2. Reduce your speed until your bow is parallel to the dock. 3. To slow down, put the vehicle in reverse gear. The bow should be secured with a spring line. 5. Fasten the stern lines together. *2. Docking with the stern: 1. Make your way at a 90-degree angle to the dock. 2. Line up your stern with the dock. 3. Put everything in reverse. 4. Verify that the boat has a stern line fastened. 5. Secure the bow lines with knots. *3. Docking in parallel: 1. Draw parallel to the shore and approach the dock. 2. Position your boat in relation to the dock. 3. Protect your boat by using fenders. 4. Use spring lines to fasten the vessel. *Additional Tips:* 1. Move slowly and deliberately. 2. Maintain constant speed. 3. Keep an eye on the people, boats, and other objects around you. 4. Be ready to change your strategy. 5. It takes practice to become perfect! Common errors made when docking: 1. Moving too fast. 2. Misjudging the area. 3. Improper line securing. 4. Not wearing fenders. 5. Failure to communicate with your crew.
