The Power of Self-Awareness: Learning from Howard Schultz's Leadership Approach. Here’s a powerful leadership lesson I’ve learned from the former CEO of Starbucks. As an executive coach with Mason & Co., I often reflect on leadership qualities that are often untapped during practice. And Schultz is a prime example of a leader who practiced this. Schultz has openly acknowledged his weaknesses and missteps throughout his career, despite his huge contribution in leading Starbucks into a distinguished global brand in the coffee industry. He initially failed to connect Starbucks' services with the changing needs of customers. But he was self-aware and knew the areas he was lacking. So he pivoted Starbucks' strategy to have more product offerings and adopt a more personalized experience by promoting an inclusive environment for both the employees and customers. Howard reflected on his experiences and understood how this decision can impact the lives of others. As leaders, we often feel lacking - and that's great! You know where to improve and what to change. The worst thing that could happen is to get blinded by overconfidence, not knowing where you lack. When leaders are self-aware: - they adapt quickly - they build stronger teams - they promote sustainable growth Remember, to acknowledge is to improve. Lead and inspire others with this strategy. Are you self-aware? Mason & Co #executivecoaching #mentoring #executiveleaders #leadership #Inspiration #thoughtleadership

CEO for a high-quality health drinks producer that redefines industry standards | Driving Growth and Innovation in the Highly Competitive FMCG Industry | Author of the Book 'Business Kodokan'
In business, it is often thought that leaders must always have the answers. However, knowing when to say “I can’t do it” and asking for help can be one of the most strategic decisions you make. Take Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, as a prime example. When Starbucks hit a low point in 2008, Schultz openly admitted he could not solve the company’s problems alone. He brought in external experts and turned to his team for guidance, helping to transform the brand and rebuild Starbucks into a global powerhouse. His willingness to seek help ultimately led to the company's resurgence. This example highlights a powerful truth: recognising when you need help is not a sign of weakness - it is a sign of leadership maturity. Leaders who are open to support create environments where innovation thrives, and team members feel empowered to step up and contribute their expertise. In business, success is rarely achieved alone. Collaboration, humility, and knowing when to lean on others can elevate both personal and organisational growth. So, do not hesitate to ask for help - it could be the game-changer your business needs. #business #team #success #strategy #motivation

CEO | COO | Fractional C-Level | Transformative Leader | Growth Strategies | Retail | Consumer Goods | Turnarounds
Starbucks recently announced replacement of their CEO after only 1 year plus on the job amid slumping sales. The new CEO comes from Chipotle Mexican Grill where he's credited with transforming that business over the last 5-6 years. Leaders must embrace a unique set of skills and strategies to navigate the complex challenges of a corporate turnaround. Successful leaders are those who can articulate a clear vision, foster transparency, and build trust across all levels of the organization. They must be results-oriented, setting measurable goals and adjusting strategies as needed to achieve tangible outcomes. Empathy and communication are key; leaders need to engage with employees, stakeholders, and customers openly and honestly to build confidence and align everyone toward common objectives. Moreover, adaptability and innovation are vital for leaders aiming to revitalize a company. They must be willing to pivot strategies as new information emerges and drive innovation to remain competitive. Empowering team members and fostering a collaborative environment are also essential, as they leverage the collective strengths of the organization to drive the turnaround process. How are you developing your leadership skills to drive long-term growth and success? #Leadership #BusinessTurnaround #LeadershipDevelopment #ChangeManagent #TeamBuilding #Innovation #TransformationalLeadership #LeadershipSuccess

"This question hit me hard... and forced me to confront some truths about my leadership journey. "How will you work on developing your commitment as a leader? Offer specific examples" - This prompt from my Leading Teams course at Gies College of Business - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaignwas a real wake-up call. Leading a team at Walmart can feel like a whirlwind. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and lose sight of the bigger picture. This course has reminded me that true leadership is about more than just showing up – it's about fully engaging and investing in your team's success. I'm committed to strengthening my leadership by: Leading by Example: I'll model the behaviors I expect from my team, showing them what dedication and hard work truly look like. Active Listening: I'll be fully present in conversations, making sure my team feels heard and understood. Clear Expectations & Feedback: I'll ensure everyone knows what's expected and receives regular feedback on their progress, empowering them to grow. This is a journey, not a destination. But I'm excited to deepen my commitment as a leader and inspire my team to achieve great things together. #leadershipdevelopment #GiesCollegeofBusiness #commitment #teamwork #growth

I recently learned the "why" behind the remarkable taste difference in McDonald's soda offerings, and I thought it was a parable for how we, as leaders, should foster our employees. McDonald's treats each one of the raw materials with impressive reverence. From the transportation to the storage to the water pairing, even down to the size of the straw the drink is served up with. Like them or not, you have to admire their dedication to the production of their sodas. So how does this compare to leadership? I'm glad you asked. As leaders, we should treat all of our employees like they are the future of the business (I mean, they are). We shouldn't wait for an employee to raise their hand or express interest in growth, those are conversations we should have with them regularly. If we see that they have a spark when it comes to certain projects, we should fan that spark. We should cultivate the talents of others to help them grow and succeed. This helps us build trust with our employees while creating a loyal workforce. #leadership #management #womenwholead #intentionalleadership #6weekleadershipchallenge #managers #leaders

Leadership isn’t about the title or the credit. It’s having integrity in all situations and valuing collaboration. It’s recognizing and highlighting an individuals’ ideas and contributions. Highlighting and crediting another’s ideas creates a collaborative culture and inspired leaders. The price of taking credit others contributions and ideas is much higher than just the loss of their loyalty or respect. The ones truly leading are often the ones without the title at all. A title is not required when you lead by example.
