A recipe for unhappiness: fusing your identity with the military. Because what happens to your sense of self when you separate? I’ve talked to a lot of folks who struggle with this. They’ve built their identity around their achievements and their strengths in this one particular context. But the harsh reality is - what worked for them in the military won’t necessarily work for them in the civilian world. They have to take off the suit of armor and learn how to be vulnerable to things beyond their control. Continuing to wear the armor will weigh you down when you could be sprinting ahead.

Truth. Few people have enough understanding of the military for all the trickety bits on the uniform to matter. We know, and it matters inside that world. Furthermore, how we explain it in our circles may be a turn off to outsiders. I have seen former Drill Sergeants using the We turn Civilains into Soldiers line a few times and it's not taken as an onboarding process, it's taken as making an innocent fun loving teenager into a war machine. The Vets out there read that line in a "Yes!" context, to others it's horrifying
