In this era of fake news and 'alternative facts', it's heartening that people trust scientists more than CEOs, journalists and government leaders That gives scientists great power to influence public perceptions and demands, but it is one few of us are exercising Instead we tend to remain silent, keep our heads down, and focus on our work, in the mistaken idea that our data will somehow speak for itself But in doing so we cede ground to those with an anti-science agenda, most notably the fossil fuel companies who have invested billions in outright disinformation in an effort to dupe the public and prevent the transformative action we need to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change We're now in the depths of a planetary emergency, and sitting silently behind our data won't cut it any more. It is an abdication of responsibility If we want evidence-based policies to bring a safer future for all of us, scientists need to speak up Loudly, and insistently -- Data are from the 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer, a survey of 32,000 people across 28 countries
