Meaningful relationships simply can’t be built online Last week I received an invitation to my 40th high school reunion. Sadly, it listed classmates who had passed. Some of whom I kept in touch with. But in reality, my idea of “in touch” consisted of those pre-populated "Happy Bday" LinkedIn messages once a year. No lunches, coffees, or even phone calls. This has hit me hard. When the heck did ‘relationships’ shift from present, intentional, in-person events, to a few characters sent from our phones? I remember this big project early in my career. Our team pulled an all-nighter - 30 hours straight on a management buyout. The next day we still had the same suits on. I cherish these memories. Working elbow to elbow is where real connections were built. There was a sense of comradery and energy. This is where the magic happens - working late with great people, building relationships over cold pizza and terrible coffee! This theme carried through my week. I had the chance to present to our CBIZ Benefits & Insurance division. It was incredible. I met many people for the first time despite this being a major part of our organization. What does all this mean? I am going to be much more intentional and present when it comes to relationships. Both personal and what it means for CBIZ. Society is changing and sometimes not for the better. As leaders, we need to preserve the things that we take for granted, that we know helped to shape us. And my invitation to you. If we haven’t reconnected in a while, please reach out and I will do the same. Let’s get together in person. Perhaps over some pizza and bad coffee, like the good old days.
1000%!!! I remember pulling all nighters (and weekenders) in the original CBIZ Payroll office and then always being tapped for the Saturday 11p-7a W-2 printing shift…and those were FUN times!!! Come on down to Roanoke and I’ll be happy to take you to a GOOD pizza place!! 😬
I'm in for pizza! 😎 Our new "reality" is scary, and I try like heck to turn the tables on my 2 teen kids. Almost FORCE them to get uncomfortable and get outside the box early/often! I know the owners here at Blue have preached "Belly-to-belly" consulting for 29 years now...but it ain't easy!
Powerful message! Chris Spurio, CPA, CGMA Real relationships are forged through shared experiences and face-to-face interactions.
Could not agree more!! Your memories of back in the day resonate with me and all the relationships made and many still remain. However, I haven’t hit my 40th yet!! (but not far behind…) Look forward to seeing you soon!
Hit the nail on the head, Chris! We've been tricked into believing virtual connection is the same as human connection, it's not. Thank you for your contribution to the conference this past week. It's nice to put a face and personality to the name. Cheers!
Great message Chris Spurio, CPA, CGMA. Looking forward to joining CBIZ and meeting you as well as many other new colleagues!
Chris Spurio, CPA, CGMA, your post resonates with me on so many levels. The importance of meaningful relationships, both personal and professional, cannot be understated. It's interesting how life events can shape our perspectives and push us to reconsider our priorities. It reminds me of my own journey and the value of being present and intentional with those around me. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and forget to truly connect. I’m encouraged by your commitment to being more intentional with relationships. It’s something I’ve been striving for as well, especially after recognizing how much those genuine connections impact our well-being and growth. Here’s to more in-person connections and building relationships that go beyond the screen. I appreciate your reminder about the power of being truly present.
Chris Spurio, CPA, CGMA your message really hit home. I completely agree—real connections happen in person. As your support for CBIZ here at ZipRecruiter, I’d love to connect when in the Cleveland area (I'm often in the Columbus and Detroit to meet my clients). There’s nothing like face-to-face meetings. Looking forward to it—maybe over some pizza and bad coffee! Or perhaps we can skip that and enjoy one of Cleveland's finest restaurants instead! Cheers,
