Please welcome Nurdana Orynbek, a new PhD student at the IBD group. "I received my Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences with a major in Chemistry and Biology from Université de Strasbourg, France. I have then completed my Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree in Biological and Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Bioeconomy at the universities of Reims Champagne-Ardennes, AgroParisTech (France), and Liège (Belgium), where I worked on a research project on the biotechnological production of aroma compounds for foods and cosmetics using agro-industrial residues. My Master's thesis was done at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) of Vienna, focusing on the microbial strategies for acetate production from industrial by-products with a potential for CO2 fixation. Currently, I joined the IBD group and TU Wien for a PhD project in microbial oil production, and I am eager to continue working in this direction in future! My hobbies include dancing, climbing & bouldering, reading and video editing." #PhDstudent #lipidproduction #sustainability

1/5 𝐈 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐛 Fundamental research shapes research, but the downstream work changes lives. I had my fair share of “so, you don’t really work in Science anymore”, whenever I explained that the bench work, the inconstant funding, the possibility of all that work for no clear impact on people’s lives were not for me. I truly value the fundamental research, I respect it, and I love to hear my PhD students friends passionately talk about their #research and I will make sure to be there for their final presentation, but I wouldn’t change my never ending emails and Teams calls for any of that. I no longer miss my lab coat nor having my head always up in a ponytail, but I will make sure to keep that young scientist’s drive to change the world. I am closer to the clinic, closer to patients and to making an impact. No path is better, we just change the world in different ways now. So remember: even if you have hung the lab coat for good, if your passion for #science is still there, you are still a #scientist and you can celebrate #WorldScienceDay as your day. #November2024 #biotech #biotechnology Picture credits: UNESCO

Why I Chose the Fresno State Master’s in Biotechnology Program? Starting my journey in the master’s program in biotechnology at Fresno State was a pivotal decision for me, and one that came with a lot of thought. My background in biotech in India provided a strong base, but I felt a drive to expand my knowledge, refine my skills, and gain exposure to advanced research. The Fresno State program stood out as a place where I could grow both technically and professionally, especially with opportunities to work in the microbiology lab and take part in projects that are new for me and that challenge me. I came here seeking more than just academic knowledge. My goal was to develop leadership skills, explore a potential career in science industry, and discover where I fit in the vast biotech field. I knew that this journey would demand commitment and resilience, but it was essential for my career aspirations and personal growth. My time at Fresno State so far has been both challenging and rewarding, giving me a platform to broaden my knowledge, connect with inspiring people, and truly dedicate myself to the path I’ve chosen.
