“Women make clothes. Men make costume.” This is what a well-known male designer once told Dianne von Fuerstenberg. Even though women make up about 80% of fashion school graduates, only around 14% of the top 50 major fashion brands are run by women creative directors. Of the top 30 luxury brands in the Vogue Business Index, only 8 out of 33 creative director roles (around 24%) are currently held by women. At LVMH, one of the largest luxury conglomerates, only 2 of their womenswear fashion divisions (Dior and Pucci) are led by female creative directors. At Kering, another major luxury group, all 6 of their fashion brands, like Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga, are led by white male creative directors as of late 2023. A 2018 McKinsey study found that fewer than 50% of well-known womenswear brands are designed by women. While women make up the vast majority of fashion graduates, employees, and consumers, they are severely underrepresented in creative leadership roles at major fashion houses and luxury brands. Across different analyses, estimates range from just 14% to 24% of creative director positions held by women. So what do Women Creative Directors in Fashion want? DELPHINE ARNAULT ON FAMILY TIES, PROTECTING HISTORY, AND YEAR OF LEADERSHIP AT DIOR Vogue Being a member of the Arnault family, while companionable in many respects, carries its own form of isolation. Close-knit and very private, the Arnaults have been subject to increased public attention since their patriarch parceled out decision-making responsibilities over the future of LVMH to his five children (via a holding company where they each have a 20 percent stake). “When you grow up in a well-known family, you don’t have the right to make any mistakes,” Delphine’s brother Antoine explains. “People look out for the slightest flaw.” Now encompassing more than 70 brands, the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group is, as Delphine puts it, “the leading business in Europe.” In fact it’s the largest luxury conglomerate in the world, encompassing not only fashion labels but hotels, vineyards, a world-class art museum, and a huge amount of very profitable Champagne. Dior’s significance within this empire is not merely sentimental: It controls 41.4 percent of LVMH. The luxury company plays a heritage role, and an ambassadorial one too: Arnault pledged 200 million euros to the restoration of Notre-Dame cathedral and is sponsoring this year’s Paris Olympics to the tune of 150 million euros. French economists have deemed him to be more powerful than a head of state. His daughter, in a more quiet way, contributes too—to French schools. “I work a lot with education,” she tells me when I ask about causes she supports. “It’s something I do personally with specific schools that I know, who identify very good talents. Students who are super bright and don’t have money to pay for a scholarship, things like that.” It’s not something she talks about publicly. Although the Arnaults’ Shakespearean drama has drawn international attention, under French law the redistributive gesture of their patriarch is almost prosaic. Legally, you have to leave assets to your children and couldn’t disinherit them even if you wanted to. So while the intrigue over who will emerge at the top remains, the primary interest in the Arnaults is not so much familial as national. I love a good exhibition. Beautifully curated collections that tell a story of how creative work has evolved and how it endures over time. The Christian Dior Exhibition was well worth a visit to see how fashion captures mood of the moment from 1940s through to present time with theatrical and skillful couture. It included the infamous the T-shirt that rocked the fashion world in 2016 with the slogan 'We should all be feminists' on it. I don't aspire to wear Dior, but seeing the clever design, the crisp and elegant lines of the 1950s dresses up close was a real treat. In my coaching I often work with people on what their authentic identity is. I ask the question 'who are you?' and explore the alignment between the core beliefs people hold, the choices they make and the behaviours they demonstrate each day. It strikes me that the focus on what we wear and how we look is taking up a disproportionate amount of energy in life. What clothes we wear and how we look often is confused with what our identity is. I would encourage a focus on knowing what's really on the inside rather than just considering what others see on the outside. This may change the choices you make in your personal style. 🤔 So, the question for today is, if you were designing your own clothing that really represented who you were on the inside, what would it look like?
