🎯 Crawling Process :- The crawling process is the first step in how search engines, like Google, discover and gather information from websites across the internet. Crawling involves using automated programs called web crawlers (also known as spiders or bots) to explore and scan web pages. ⭐ Starting Points (Seed URLs):- Search engines begin crawling from a list of known URLs, called seed URLs. These could be previously discovered websites or URLs submitted by website owners through tools like Google Search Console. The web crawler visits these seed URLs to gather information about the page content. ⭐ Following Links:- Once on a webpage, the crawler scans the content, including all the links on the page. These links (both internal and external) are added to the crawler’s list of pages to visit next. Crawlers follow links from one page to another, which helps them discover new pages and new websites. ⭐ Crawling Web Pages:- The crawler fetches the HTML code, metadata, images, and other elements from each web page it visits. This includes the page’s title, meta description, headings, text, and links. 🤖Googlebot is the web crawling bot used by Google to discover and index web pages. It is a vital component of the search engine's functionality. Googlebot is responsible for regularly visiting websites, fetching their content, and adding the information to Google's index, which is then used to generate search results. The primary purpose of Googlebot is to help Google maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive index of the web. It follows links from one page to another, crawls and analyzes the content of those pages, and indexes the information to make it searchable. Webmasters and site owners can control how Google bot interacts with their sites through the use of a file called "robots.txt," which can instruct the bot on which pages to crawl or avoid. Additionally, the "meta robots" HTML tag allows more granular control over how specific pages are crawled and indexed. It's important for website owners to ensure that their sites are accessible to Google-bot and that their content is optimized for search engines to achieve better visibility in Google search results.

SEO Tip: a reminder that Google Search Console now has a robots.txt testing function within the indexing report. If you click on a page that has been flagged in the report, a panel appears that shows you the exact line for why crawling has been prevented. This is a useful feature of GSC that launched late last year that is somewhat hidden within the dashboard. A different way of accessing the tool (from a different viewpoint) is within the 'Settings' tab. As another thought on this topic, it is incredible how many large-scale sites use their robots files incorrectly for trying to remove random individual pages from Google's index. The file is for crawl management – if you want something out of Google's index completely, use the noindex meta tag or the HTTP response header. For sites that use the robots file instead of noindex, they end up with a long list of messy pages that they don't want showing on Google, that can quickly become outdated. What this results in is many pages that eventually redirect or no longer exist – with Google unable to crawl them to see the changes *facepalm*. This becomes very messy and is not a discrete way of trying to hide the content. It can then become even more complicated and messy when large-scale sites are using sub-domains for important sections of their sites. Sub-domains often have their own robots files that are independent of the main site (being quite different), and are often not managed particularly well. So the issue above is often exacerbated through too much complexity for sites to manage. While this type of mistake is unlikely to cause major issues, and often does achieve removal from Google's search results, it is important that tools that are available at an SEOs disposable are used as they are intended to be. It's important to keep your robots.txt files tidy and organised so that when the next SEO in your organisation takes a look at it, they can continue to easily manage it over time. #seo #searchengineoptimization #google

🔶 Google Search Console is now equipped with a robots.txt testing feature in the Index Coverage report. If you click on a flagged page in the report, a panel will display which line of the robots.txt file is preventing your site from being crawled. This useful Search Console feature was launched last year but, for some reason, was hidden from users in the dashboard. Another way to access this section is through the settings of Search Console. 🔶 You wouldn't believe how many large-scale websites mistakenly use their robots.txt file to block random pages from being indexed by Google. This file is meant for managing site crawls. If you want a page to be completely unindexed by Google, use the noindex meta tag or the HTTP response header. Websites that use the robots.txt file instead of noindexing pages will quickly end up with a long list of disorganized pages they didn't want appearing in Google search results, pages that quickly become outdated. The result is a large number of pages that end up being redirected or no longer exist because Google cannot see the changes made to them during the crawl. This method has many flaws and is not an appropriate or effective way to hide pages from Google bots. 🔶 If these large-scale websites use sub-domains to manage important sections of their site, the result becomes even more complicated and disorganized. Sub-domains often have their own robots.txt files, which are independent of the main site (and often completely different), and they are usually not written correctly. This, combined with the aforementioned issue, makes managing site pages very complex. 🔶 Overall, these kinds of mistakes usually do not create major problems on the site, and the needed pages are often successfully removed from Google results. However, it's important to use these available tools correctly and according to their instructions.
