My father, David Packard, had a boundless curiosity about the world. When he turned that curiosity to the ocean, he brought a unique vision to the work of understanding the processes that sustain the largest living space on Earth. At MBARI, he teamed up talented scientists and engineers, with n extraordinary marine operations team, exceptional science communicators, and the myriad staff needed to keep the research institute functioning. Collectively, over nearly four decades, they have contributed so much to our knowledge of the living ocean. "It's not just HMS Victory that's at risk; any wooden structure, especially those made of oak, can be affected. In fact, Westminster Hall also fell victim, with cavities discovered large enough to fit an adult human." PhD student Cathryn Harvey, a Deathwatch Beetle expert, is examining a 70-year-old replacement plank from HMS Victory's deck. Collaborating with researchers from the University of Oxford and the The National Museum of the Royal Navy to further study the Deathwatch Beetle. The project aims to support ongoing conservation efforts, gain a deeper understanding of the beetle's behaviour and biology, and help to preserve the historic warship, HMS Victory. 🗣️ 🎉 East Carolina University's Dr. Steven M. Richter, Assistant Professor in the ECU Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment, has been selected as one of more than 150 experts to author the first-ever National Nature Assessment (NNA1), by The U.S. Global Change Research Program❗ With the full author team in place, the writing phase of the NNA1 is now kicking off. Over the next two years, Richter and other authors will take stock of what nature provides in terms of its inherent worth, our culture, health and well-being, jobs and livelihoods, safety and more, while looking ahead to understand how these benefits might change in the future.
