The German government is doubling down on its commitment to propel innovative tech startups to new heights! 👏 The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BWMK) has announced that the Federal Government has allocated an additional €1.75 billion in funding from the Future Fund and the ERP Special Fund. This follows the strategy of “invest early, invest small, invest in hard technology," recognising that scientific advancements require sustained support to evolve into market-ready solutions with transformative economic and societal impact. In Shenzhen, five “20+8” industry funds—including the Synthetic Biology Fund and Intelligent Sensor Fund—with a total scale of US$2.2 billion, officially signed agreements with the first batch of five intended investment projects. The city's Guangming District also launched its first seed fund in collaboration with the private sector, with an initial scale of US$30 million. Meanwhile, Shanghai’s Venture Capital Guidance Fund, one of China’s earliest public funds, continues its leadership with a US$2 billion scale. At the 2024 WeStart Global Venture Capital Conference, Ju Ming, GM of the fund, emphasized the critical role of public capital in the current market, especially as private capital becomes more conservative. In 2023, public funds contributed to over 40.6% of new RMB fundraising in China’s equity markets. These funds, and the companies that manage them, have inherent advantages such as their large network that can support early stage startups with commercial and follow on funding opportunities. Startups from sectors such as AI, energy generation and storage continue to attract the interest of investors - and there is dry powder as we see from the Swiss Venture Capital H1 report. However, given the mixed picture of the overal landscape the lesson is for startups to start early with preparing their next financing round, work on their ability to scale and prove it.
