A reminder to dietitians working with clients around Thanksgiving: culture matters! While the audience is geared toward to food banks, the tips apply to dietitians, too. -ASK your clients about their cultural backgrounds and the foods they eat this time of year. -LEARN about new foods from your clients. -RESPECT their boundaries about what tastes good to them and what doesn't. #dietitians #thanksgiving2023 #culturalfoods

Food Justice Advocate | Food Pantry Consultant | Bringing justice and dignity to the fight to end hunger

This week, my food pantry will be buried in turkeys. We anticipate hundreds of clients showing up hoping we can provide them with the foods for their traditional family celebration. But we will also serve hundreds of families for whom Thursday is just another day, and one where they hope to prepare borscht, or a tofu stir-fry, or enchiladas, and other meals that help them celebrate their families. It is essential for food pantries to make room for- and uplift- all culinary traditions by ensuring the food supply actually matches the needs of the people we serve.
