Exec Chats: 4 Qualities I Find Inspirational
I’ve heard this wisdom twice in the past month from two brilliant thinkers: a top CEO and a very impressive restaurant manager. It struck a chord as I’ve been reading “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.
In their own words, they each echoed what Jim Collins wrote:
“The key is not to hire high-performance people and then motivate them, but to hire already motivated people and inspire them. You don’t need to manage these people, you lead them.”
The CEO: “my success as a CEO has been hiring the right people. They are brilliant and I just let them shine.”
The restaurant manager: “hiring right is the most important thing in a restaurant, everything else gets solved by the people I hire."
Talking about inspiring others, while my list may sound simplistic these are some qualities, I find inspirational in other people:
1. People that care. If I’m sick, they ask how I am. If a life event happens, I know they care about it.
2. People that share their time and wisdom. Everyone has something to offer and those taking the time to invest in me, inspire me.
3. People that ask for help and ask for my views on things. They bring out the best in those around them.
4. And, good people, who commit to doing good in the world.
Hire well, look for motivated people, and then dare to lead and inspire them.
