As I was watching the documentary #musicbyjohnwilliams 🎼 , it dawned on me... Hiring Managers = the director Talent Acquisition = the composer The relationship between a director and a composer is a crucial part of the filmmaking process. It's essential for the composer to understand the director's vision. Directors rely on composers to enhance the emotional depth and storytelling of a film through music. We all have that soundtrack we love. One that pulls us back to scenes in our favourite movies. The Talent team is the composer to the Hiring Manager. We bring to life the role at hand, shaping the tone and mood of the position through making meaningful connections, educating, and inspiring. A successful hiring partnership transforms a job into an opportunity. It transforms an interview process into an experience. It creates an employer brand that serves as the soundtrack, drawing people back to watch the movie. The moral of the story: Understanding eachothers vision takes time. Before recruitment is launched, invest time upfront to your job kick-offs. Get really aligned on the vision and execution. Build trust in each other. The results will come ⚡ #Hiring #TalentAcquisition

🎥 Thinking about hiring someone for your TV/Film project? 😎 But wait… do you even know what you’re hiring for? 🤔 You on Day 1: “I just need someone to film my show. Easy, right?” Also you after your first meeting: “Wait… what’s a DP? Isn’t the editor just the one who presses play? Why do I need a sound mixer? I thought cameras had mics?” 📸🎤 Reality check: No, Susan, the Director of Photography isn’t the one in charge of taking pictures for Instagram… 😅 📝 If you don’t understand who does what in TV/Film, hiring someone can feel like you’re ordering a sandwich in a language you don’t speak. You’ll either end up with the wrong sandwich… or no sandwich at all! 🥪🚫 Solution: Before you put out that job posting, do your research! 🧠 A quick Google search (or chat with a pro!) can save you from hiring a grip when what you really needed was a producer… 🙃 📢 Pro tip: Knowing industry roles = hiring the right people = your project doesn’t become an accidental comedy. 🎬😂 #FilmBiz101 #HireSmart #DoYourResearch #NotAllCamerasHaveMics #DontCallTheDPForSelfies #BehindTheScenesMagic #FilmmakerJourney #ProducersSaveTheDay #HollywoodHustle

The moon landing wasn't staged but the interview I just attended certainly was. After an HR mix-up that resembled a tangled timeline from a Christopher Nolan film—wrong dates, last-minute reschedules, and then a final twist—I found myself sitting in front of two marketing and sales experts… for a role in filmmaking and photography. The confused looks on their faces as I pitched my camera skills about why I am so hirable did not go unnoticed. It's a shame that my opportunity at this role was fumbled but I guess I got a surrealist experience of "auditioning" for a role that no longer existed - can I make an IMBD page now? If I did, my credits would be: 1. Director of Time Travel Misadventures 2. Writer of Unscripted Interview Scenarios 3. Cinematographer of Confused Expressions 4. Actor in "The Job That Wasn't" My search continues and hopefully my luck is looking more kindly on me for the next interview schedule!" #filmmaking #CreativeJobs #JobSearch #CreativeIndustry #HRFails #CreativeCareer

How to make sure you don't end up hiring a weird sound person (IYKYK)... The exact system I've used for over 15 years to find reliable not-weird crew... 1️⃣ Your Existing Network → A-players know A-players → One message can fill every position → Already pre-vetted 2️⃣ Industry Platforms (in rate of personal preference) → StaffMeUp → ProductionHub → Mandy → Would recommend having a quick video call to vet the person... 3️⃣ Local Film Groups → City-specific crew Facebook groups (ie - NYC Filmmakers, Hue you know, Chicago filmmakers, etc) → Fast response for urgent needs → Direct access to local talent 4️⃣ Strategic Google Search → Format: [Position] + [City] → Example: "Sound Mixer Chicago" → Can usually find portfolio pages or LinkedIn Want a 350+ person roster of vetted video talent across the world? #Hiring "HIRING" A DAY IN MY YESTERDAY Yesterday evening when am all ready to go to market. (Ting) a pop-up message from whatsapp. I don't usually look at WhatsApp messages that way. Again. (Ting) (Ting) (Ting) Lookslike messages are from someone who knows me well. I opened my WhatsApp. (4 messages from c. Nolan ) Nolan is an American and has done a lot of films there, and we met in the cinema lovers group on Facebook, that's how we became good friends. Nolan: It's been a while since you have sent a message. Eventhough am completely free I told him : last two months I was very busy, that's why I couldn't send mesages Nolan: Let me know, what's going on. Me: I'm working on a short film. Nolan: Dude , why didn't you tell before? Me: I told you I was very busy working on that Nolan: Ok, tell me more about it. Did you find a team? Me: No. Nolan: Do you have any money? Me: No. Nolan: ok, fool then how it's gonna happen? Me: somehow am gonan make it. Nolan: Do you need any help, if you need I will send my team Me: Thanks for asking, but for this i don't need your Americans help, I will find it from here. Nolan: Well, where you now? Me: Heading to market Nolan: why? Me: Going to advertise a poster. Nolan: What poster? Me: "We Are Hiring" This is the trick now here people used to attract audience. I think i can use that too to find support from people Nolan: What a stupid idea. Me: Let me try it. I closed my WhatsApp. (Ting) (Ting) (Ting) The messages kept coming, but without looking at it I went to the market. #hiring #film #jobs #cinema #producers #production #writing #content #editor #cinematographer #director #sounds #soundeditor #vfx #production #lighting #movie #help

It’s been tough to watch my son navigate the challenges of starting his career in a world that feels stacked against him. He graduated college during the pandemic, started his first job remotely in the VFX industry as a compositor, and then lost it when the actor/writer strikes rippled through the entertainment and post-production industries. Since then, he’s sent out hundreds of resumes, full of ambition and hope, only to face silence, delays, and being ghosted by hiring managers. To hiring professionals: do better. These are young, eager, and capable individuals who were dealt a difficult hand. A bit of kindness and transparency can go a long way. If you’re not moving forward with a candidate, let them know. If they reach out, respond. These small acts of respect can make a world of difference to someone just trying to find their place. Let’s create a culture where we support, not discourage, the next generation of talent. They deserve better. #Recruitment #TalentAcquisition #HiringNow #SupportYoungTalent

Think like a casting director. It’s not always the right fit, right? This might not be the right role/job or project for you right now. Someone else might be a better fit for the role. Don’t let fear or people pleasing drive a “yes” that should be a respectful pass. I’ve learned from decades in the entertainment industry that smart artists are consciously and consistently curating their time and resume. Actors, directors, and other creatives that work all the time pass all the time. (We are sad for a moment and then move on. It’s ok. Better they pass on the role or project than be grumpy on set.) Listen to your gut. Respectfully pass when the “casting” doesn’t feel right for you, and for your life. (Just like a smart and successful actor who knows this won’t be the last role, the last job.) Nature abhors a vacuum. More work will come. #performancecoach #executivecoach #presentationcoach #coaching #performanceskills #specialsauce #presentationtraining #pitching #salespitch
