This needs to be treated with caution, because children can sometimes take delight in filling each other with exaggerated stories of their new school (well, my older sister did 😋). But if you can find a kind and trustworthy older pupil, then your child can get a much more pupil-orientated view of the school and get to ask much more personal questions, rather than academic ones. Try to avoid negative rabbit holes, but this can be a great way to ease the mind, especially if your child knows and trusts the older pupil. Resilient Math Teacher and Mentor | Seeking to Influence Cultural Change in Schools | Advocate for Teacher Satisfaction and Retention
I spoke to a mama yesterday who had hives waiting for the school to release her daughter’s standardized test scores. To all the folks out there involved with public education, let’s not forget to empathize with the parent who is anticipating an email regarding their child’s academic performance. While individual’s reactions are outside of the realm of our control and are not our responsibility, we as teachers of these courses can try to make a miserable experience better by: 🤩Proactively emailing parents with a timeline for testing and remediation; 😊Communicating how and when we will share scores with students and parents; and 🤓Sharing what their child’s score means and the next steps for them as a result of their score.

This is a 𝐇𝐎𝐓 𝐓𝐎𝐏𝐈𝐂. My wife and I personally lived this one in our child's grade 8 year with a new teacher. Unfortunately, they don't teach neurodiversity in teachers college, nor provide teachers with the necessary tools and data to help understand each student and differentiate learning. We believe teachers that leverage cognitive data on their students are better able to tailor #teachingstrategies to ensure that every child is successful with their curriculum. #studentsuccess #education #teaching
A sad story but unfortunately punitive measures won't ever work for children with learning challenges. ""No zero policy"" is a topic for another day, but identifying the learning skills and learning style of every student will help teachers with classroom complexities TODAY.
